The supersonic boom which everybody knows about is basically a massive build up of pressure around a point on the aircraft. The reason Concorde was so loud was because of the focus of this pressure being at a point on the nosecone. The smaller this point, the sharper and harder the noise, so currently the technological development in supersonic travel is to spread this point out accross the aircraft, so hopefully the supersonic boom will become more of a dull whoomph or rumble, thus allowing supersonic travel over land. Awesome! The reason there is a cloud on this occasion is because the air around this pressure point is under ridiculous pressure, making it hotter, so you get a very rapid formulation of a cloud. God what a geek. But it's damn scary when you're in an F-14 because the cloud tends to appear on the nosecone section right in front of the central window, so you can't see sh!t when it happens

The pressure wave and sonic boom that the spectators would have felt and heard from the distance they were standing as it broke the sound barrier would be an experience in itself (probably why there is no sound file), top marks to the pilot for his perfect timing. Not to sure what effect you would have felt as a spectator. Would it blast a wave of air at them or want to suck it back out of their lungs? or perhaps it would do both as it came and went?
