cant stand their software and the way it gets into everything needing a reformat to rid the system of it.
(broadband or dial up)

aptly nicknamed AOHELL on www.adslguide.org.uk forums.

Never had to re-format a hdd to get rid of AOL...... maybe this option is for the un-experianced dim-wits!

well you can keep your modem, as long as you get a router/wireless box which will accept usb connection.(not many about)

easiest thing is get a combined modem, router wireless box and ditch the free usb modem.

this is what i plan to do when i get a laptop.

just went with USB modem for mow as it was so cheap.

far easier is get a

Yes this is my plan....

Im going to wire up CAT5/RJ45 network for the upstairs machines then use wireless LAN for the pc downstairs and my cheap laptop.

If you want to go the wireless route then here are the details of the kit that I recommended to Inigo over at TS.net for a smiliar setup.

You just need the following:

1 x Netgear Wireless Access Point/ADSL Router (DG824M)
1 x Netgear PCMCIA Wireless card for laptop (MA401)
3 x Netgear PCI Wireless card for PC's (MA311)

Connect the DG824M to the ADSL line and then the PC's & Laptop wirelessly connect to the internet through it. Simple. You can sell the free USB External modem on Ebay too.
This kit will run at 11Mbps (802.11b) and should be fairly cheap to get hold of. If you need faster speed between your PC's then you need to look at the newer 54Mbps (802.11g) kit.

For more info on the kit go to www.netgear.co.uk

No need for a router, I've just got USB Broadband connected to my PC along with and Intel Anypoint USB wireless connector, and a PCMCIA version on my laptop - uses the PC as a gateway, and a lot cheaper

Don't bother with wireless, waste of money... Cat5 is much better. Use one of the PCs as a firewall (www.smoothwall.org) and buy a 10/100 LinkSys 8 port switch (www.ebuyer.co.uk).

Cool setup, IMHO.

Wireless a pain in the tits...

Get yourself a Vigour 2200usb router and cat5 the lot. Got one of these at home with 3 pc's and a laptop networked. Got it's own built in firewall. No messing about just plug the cat5 in your network/lan card/port then into the router. Connect the usb modem into the router, enter your userid and password into the seup of the router via explorer and your surfing...Easy peasy...Router never needs to be turned off or powered up just leave it on. Always ready...

Works for me anyway...

Chaps I digress...

My new work laptop has built in wireless card, so I bought a wireless router (Netgear MR314 approx £80) and connected my NTL cable modem to it. I reckon wireless is absolutely amazing. I can use the internet in the garden or in the lounge with no wires anywhere.

I also have a desktop PC connected to the Router via cat5 (the router has ethernet ports as well as wireless) and I just use my laptop to connect to that machine remotely (no monitor)

Wireless is imo a revelation, saves being stuck ina bedroom in front of a PC
