Re spam
Re spam
I am getting a big problem with spam on a Monday morning.
During the week I can cope with it as my email is downloaded on a regular basis, but come Monday morning after no weekend downloads .
Anyone got any advice on how to stop or minimise this problem.

Re: Re spam
You could try spampal.
I use it and it appears to work for me ok.
Got whitelists,blacklists etc...
You can configure it to how you like.
And it's totally free

Re: Re spam
or try SpamNet from Cloudmark at http://www.cloudmark.com/products/spamnet
(beware, one of their competitors bought the spamnet.org url).
It's a pretty good solution for Outlook 2000 which works through a database of declared spams by all users, community-style, and dumps the spams into a Spam folder under Outlook. With two icons in the toolbar, you can easily block/deblock any sender.
Often considered as the best spam-killer around due to community-stytle BUT their switch from free-for-all to monthly-fee received quite an uproar.
Nevertheless just go for the trial version, at the end of the 30-days free ride, you'll be able to stick with the free beta-version and avoid the 3.99 USD monthly fee for the full-enhanced version (not worth it, imho).

Re: Re spam
Thanks for the replys.
I will look into both of them.
I will look into both of them.
Re: Re spam
Just a correction on my SpamNet recommendation : forget it ...
They've now 100% moved to a 3.99 USD monthly fee.
After the 30-days free trial, the beta stops working (even after uninstall/re-install), contrary to their initial promises to the community.
Bunch of fecking greedy liars.
Apologies for suggesting their product.

Re: Re spam
So you think they are robbing b*stards do you?! That's nothing! I've been using a UKonline account for three years or so now which was fine until recently when it has developed serious problems with spam - now if I'm away for even a few days it just jams the whole thing up. To 'solve' the problem, benevolent old UKonline have put a 'spamfilter' function in which not only catches only about half the crap but actually stores it for you rather than deletes it, so it jams the system up even more. So guess what? You have to ring ukonline (on a premium rate phone line of course) to get them to empty it. I'm totally f***ed off with the whole thing...
Please can someone recommend a different good email system to use? I'm really not computer-minded so haven't a clue.
Thanks
Gordon

Re: Re spam
before broadband I used uku.co.uk
They are a free service (well, local rate dialup), and give pretty good transfer rates.
another one is netfornowt, but I've not personally used them.
Do a web search for 'free uk internet' or 'free access' or something similar and it should find you a whole load of places.
There are also a couple of sites that give lists of free providers, but I forget their names now.
I had no problems at all with spam on my uku account, but do get the occasional spam on my hotmail account.
If you mail to a yahoo group or something that is where they often seem to trawl for email addresses (I st up one account purely for yahoo, ebay etc so know roughly where they are picking up my address from).
Cheers,
John.

Re: Re spam
I've now used "Qurb" for two days, as it received a PC Magazine Editor's Choice.
http://download.com.com/3000-2382-10217 ... ag=lst-0-1
The little applet (831Kb) is pretty smart in its install : it scans your entire mailbox (received and sent), with the exception of "deleted" or "spam" directories.
Then it considers that all messages you've saved -or wrote to- come from legitimate email senders.
That becomes your autorized list.
Anything coming from an unknown sender gets dumped into a Qurb directory, up to you to authorize it.
As I rarely get messages from new legitimate users, that works just fine with me.
As a result : it stops 100% of Spam and about 10% of legitimate mails (ie those who write you for the first time).

Re: Re spam
Explains why no response to my e-mails, Eric!
I thought it was because I have not sent any!

Re: Re spam
Dog, sorry I didn't reply earlier to your mail and thanks for the massive file
. (I also sent you a PM).
The thing is I'm travelling on holidays in the Alps and using an SPV phone (a GSM phone working under Windows Phone 2002 OS) to connect my notebook through a mobile connection and that means so far a very slow connection.
Once I'll be back late August to my ADSl line, I'll be able to open and read everything
.
In the meantime, QURB is doing wonders : 100 % spam stopped indeed, yipeee !

Re: Re spam
Just an update on Qurb : I've used for a full month and I'm 100% satisfied with it.
Quite a neat and clever little applet, wouldn't think without it now (spams have really exploded in past weeks).
Also, another super cool tool : Google Toolbar which now comes with a very smart and efficient pop-up blocker.
Superb, no more pop-ups ! (but you can manually set overide for sites with login or quote pop-ups like financial services).
