Lawnmower: cordless or petrol

Post by Shoppinit » Sat Dec 16, 2017 12:13 pm

I have a deep ingrained mistrust of anything battery powered, but I'm look for a lawnmower for my Dad and it's surprisingly hard to find one that ticks the vital boxes:

1. Electric start (for petrol).
2. Self propelled.
3. Roller for stripes.
4. Weighs less than a dead donkey.

I personally would probably go for the petrol one, but I get that he doesn't want to faff around cleaning carbs and faffing around with cans of petrol.

The only alternative is the cordless variant, but they are expensive (for what they are) and I'm worried that they are not powerful enough. 1500W isn't much. The petrol ones are 2500W.

Another problem with the petrol ones is that they weigh up to 45Kg! That's bonkers. Gotta be annoying to manhandle.

I guess I'm asking whether it would be a mistake to buy a cordless / Lithium battery one.

Anyone have any wisdom to share?

Good petrol mowers are not a maintenance concern these days.

Buy a good brand (I use Honda), run it on Aspen 4 for good measure and have it serviced every three years or so.

The Apsen costs more than super unleaded per litre, but comes in handy cans and keeps forever.

Thanks. I was looking at the Honda ones, but they don't have electric start unless you want to spend silly money. Mountfield seem to be the ones with the features I require.

Buy a Goat. Strap a trailer with a concrete roller on it. Attach a remote control winch to the goat. Peg out a zig zag pattern for the winch cable to run back and forth. Make yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and slowly winch away. This method always has the bonus of free fertiliser. And at the end of summer it’ll make a wicked organic Curry Goat.

Not a bad idea. I was using Chunky's mum in a similar way but she left too many snail trails.

Depends how big the garden is, no point buying a petrol mower if it's the size of a postage stamp. That said, i too have a Honda petrol mower and it's a piece of piss to start although heavy.
If the G-Tech mower is anything like their vacuum cleaner, it'll be pretty good imo.

if you can live without the stripes, what about a robotic one. I bought my dad a husquvana one, i named it 'Hoolio' and hes a very hard worker. Normally works at night given that it has LED's on it and there is no need to carry grass bags etc as it cuts it so often it just mulches in.

I however have a hayter 56 pro as i love the stripes but, as you mentioned, it weighs the same as a dead donkey

His dad's ashamed of him, so won't let him go round the house in case the neighbours see him.

+1 aRSed with other types. All I ever do is put 99RON in it. It's been to MRC for a straight through exhaust, quiet start, remap & top end limiter removal. Doug said it's one of the strongest he's seen with no heat soak at all. I've also had it corner waited and it now turns on the spot. :smile_smoking:
