ZoneAlarm?

Post by Riz_RS4 » Sat Apr 26, 2003 12:51 pm

Has anybody got this little free application, its pretty good as it stops people using your ip to send popups etc..... but what is worrying me is that ive only had it running for 3days and so far ive had 69 intrusions which have been blocked and 36 of them have been high-rated.... is this normal.... i didnt know that your pc was so vunrable to hackers etc

I used to have zonealarm (don't need it now as I have a hardware firewall with NAT facilities) and it was good - especially for stopping spyware apps sending data back to their hosts.

If you are on dialup, be aware that most 'Alarms' will be false as the packets will normally be intended for the computer that had the IP address prior to you dialing up and grabbing the 'Freed' ip address.

I tried Kaspersky Antivirus and ZoneAlarm last year. Seemed neat but install/setup/support wasn't their strength, so I didn't renew my license.

Since then, I played "safe and simple" by going Norton for the PC :
- Norton Personal Firewall
- Norton Antivirus
They use the same LiveUpdate program so they both get updated simultaneously.
Do a great job so far, very easy to install and setup (especially the firewall which can really be annoying if overzealous).

Here's a good link from CNET Reviews which covers many products through reviews, including "Internet Security Suites".
Use the menu column on the left, "Security Software" to browse around the different product categories.

You'll probably see the pure specialists like KAV or ZoneAlarm get the best grades. I don't agree though, too geeky criterias : yeah Linux rules, but for my work and home desktops, I go Microsoft
