Personally I'm not a fan of Watchfinder. With their very high prices, miserley p/x values and corporate Shop assistants who know very little about watches, the gloss gets taken off what should be a highly pleasurable buying experience. They also sell a lot of poorly refinished stuff that the untrained eye wouldn't see but you'll get hit on come p/x time at another dealer.

Also it's fair to say central London dealers such as WatchClub, Armour Winston etc, are quit expensive due to their location and clientele. That's not to say they don't give you good service, David Duggan being a good example in Burlington Arcade, who treat every customer like royalty. Armour Winston on the other hand have the worst shopping experience of all the dealers I know.

I prefer to use an AD who will discount, or small reputable independent dealers, my favourite being Dom Hackett in Hatton Garden, an absolute top man who has a reputation across all the watch forums as second to none. He only carries his p/x stock on his website (http://www.hackettwatches.co.uk) but 90% of his trade is sourcing watches for his clients. He recently sourced me my brand new Batman at list price, whilst others are charging £1k+ premiums.

I have no connection to Dom other than being a very satisfied customer. :)

That my friend is excellent intel, thanks for the advice. Anyone selling a Batman at list in the current market is either selling a hooky watch (I'm joking) or is looking at long term relationships over short term gains. Nice to hear such people still exist.

Don't get me wrong, he's a dealer, so he is charging a premium for stock Batman's, but his custom is repeat/referral business so he will go the extra mile for an established client. I've being buying watches from Dom since 2011, so he knows that I'll always make him the first port of call, with that in mind he did me the favour on the Batman when I asked if he could source me one, and he took my Omega (previously seen in this thread) as p/x which he will make a profit on. So it worked out in both sides of the fence.

I can't speak more highly of him. If you're on Pistonheads you'll see his name is always being recommended, and he goes out of his way to help e.g a chap flew in to buy a Watch from him and Dom met him at the airport so he didn't have to do journeys into London. He operates out of a private office in Hatton Garden so he doesn't have an expensive showroom to fund. If you ever get in touch tell him Kevin Powell sent you. :)

You will be very very lucky to find the top selling rollies in UK duty free shops. Why would they stock them there when people pay full or even more (batman) in their non DF shops.

For a different discussion, but has anyone else noticed just how much "duty free" sucks donkey balls these days. I travel a bit and am yet to find a better price in one of the rip off DF shops in Uk airports than I can get online. It makes me wanna puke with disgust. Bleh

Duty free is pants , I was going to buy a sim free phone and it's a bit pointless . I'm not looking at duty free airport shops for a rolly , if there's a local dealer I'll have a nosey and pay for it if they are available . Maybe another sub

Horology....

Post by FaisalJ » Wed Dec 28, 2016 11:11 pm

Sure, it won't apply to every watch, but it was cheaper than anywhere online for my Tudor, so don't dismiss it without checking is all I'm saying!

On a separate note - anyone used Toshi straps or any other good custom strap maker they'd recommend? I'd like a leather option - but I don't like the Tudor leather option.

I very much doubt you have any chance of a discount on a GMT in the current market. As above, there's a 2yr waiting list for a BLNR, so you'll have to be buying some serious amounts of metal from your AD to get even a penny off one, and even then AD's are now audited by Rolex to see who they are selling and at what price.

Tudor are an excellent watch - and for those who dont know, they are very closely affiliated with Rolex, are made in the same factories in fact, but use "lesser" movements (ETA rather than in house).

The waiting list has always been about that iirc the Daytona etc was longer ( seem to remember 5 years ) and I bought my first one off the list . It's the same with certain cars but you do the legwork with the dosh and you can drop lucky
