Shocked. I memorised his Live at the Met stand up when I was 14. Leg-end.

Such a shame he felt the need to walk that path. His work will always live on.

I always felt he was one of the best actors to not get an oscar.

I worked in a sports shoe Shop in San Francisco years ago when travelling for a short while - he was always dropping in and buying 'sneakers' - politest, sincerest and unassuming chap I met on all my travels...

Did he not get an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role for Good Will Hunting?

Yep, not best actor. He always said it was political.
I think he was beat fair and square in '89 and '91 but '87?!?! Michael Douglas!?!? He can't act, he plays the same character every time, RW had more depth of emotion in his eyebow than MD has ever had, ever. Still, MD is actually still alive, so, there is that. Still, I'm very saddened.

Indeed, not best actor. However, His legacy of work certainly warranted an oscar in several places. I only saw him last Sunday night in 'The Angriest man in Brooklyn' - he was a genius in that. 87' for Good Morning Vietnam he should have had, without doubt...

He was an amazing serious actor, comedy a part. Eg:

The Fisher king
Good Will Hunting
The Final Cut

Awakenings. For everyone but the academy had as best actor over De Niro.
Just sat on the train now and can't help thinking about that Millennium Man movie he did and how it ended.

Can’t pretend I liked his style as an actor, I didn’t. (found him very difficult to watch).

But a great stand-up comedian and very intelligent man.

Sad loss.

Just watched this and it summed his talent up brilliantly: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7325278.stm

I think it's some tech debate and he was there (don't know why) and I'm convinced it's Sergey Brin behind him...

He's been one of my favourite TV/Film people ever since I watched Mork and Mindy re-runs in the 80s.

I watched Good Will Hunting a few weeks back hoping it would be as good as it was when it first came out. It was. Some parts hadn't aged well but every scene with him is golden. The part about his wife farting in bed is priceless. I read today that he made that bit up and had the production crew in hysterics. You can even see the camera shake in the youtube clip:

I think I liked him more as an actor than as a comedian. Some serious depth to that man on screen.
