Positano on the Amalfi coast. Stunning beautiful and you can go exploring to your hearts content. Beware, the Italians are crazy drivers! :)

We stayed in Hotel Maricanto in Positano recently. Quite expensive but was awesome sitting in the Infinity Pool about 150 m above the beach.

we arrived home friday, had a great time very tired from all the shopping, sightseeing and eating.

we went on the night tour on a coach and then to a water taxi over to see the statue of liberty then to watch the sunset over new york, followed by a meal, good price too think it was the grey line bus group, theyre all over NY in red trying to sell you tours.

never take cd's off anyone even though they say they are free theyre not.

up to you but dont talk to comedy club people in times square they dont let you leave, and the club is the other side of town not local.

try not to make eye contact with the bus companys (red and yellow jackets) they will keep you talking.

play off each tour guide saying the other is better, we got another 2 days hop on hop off on the bus ( good way to get around and get your bearings)

5th or Broadway are the best places for shopping

who are you flying with?

Holiday Ideas

Post by lma07 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:45 am

One of the best Hols I've been on was fly to Vegas. See grand canyon then pick up hire car and drive through death valley, area 51, a couple of national parks and head for California. I missed out LA and headed up the coast to San fran.

I booked accommodation in vegas and San fran but just stopped and checked in to places that I fancied stopping at en route.

For New York it's worth seeing the statue of liberty up close but don't bother queuing to go up inside her. You can get good photos from the boat. Been there 3 times and it's amazing how many buildings you recognise from films. Good photo opportunities from the empire state building of central park and the liberty. The bus tour is a good way to get your bearings when you get there but as mentioned before make sure you haggle. There is a revolving restaurant on 5th ave but it's a waste of time.

I was in New York last September (going again November). If you haven't booked your accommodation yet, have a look at hotels in Hoboken rather than New York itself. You'll get a lot more hotel room for your money. I stayed in the W Hoboken - it's not cheap but there are occasional promotions. The sunrises and sunsets were mighty impressive and you get a view like this every night from your room:

Image

There are underground trains every few minutes that will bring you in/out of New York all hours of the day and night. There's a couple of foot passenger ferries which are fun but nothing beats the train for leaving right in the centre of Manhattan. You really don't miss out on a thing. Plus you've got Hoboken to explore on lazier days - everything's turned down a notch. Great food, chilled atmosphere.

If/when you get department store overload go to SoHo. It's quiet, the shops are smaller, nicer and don't seem to attract the hoards. All your upmarket brands are there in more compact form. I'm not a shopper and even I liked it! Lots of places to grab a coffee and just chill out.

B&H on 9th & 34th is gadget mecca (or the jewish orthodox equivalent). The camera department is unreal and you can try everything before you buy. They've got a website - most stuff is cheaper than over here.

Pastis in the meatpacking district is a good place for breakfast. Was in the Sex and City film which will win points with any daft girl you've brought along :notworthy: . It'll still be warm enough to have breakfast outside but go midweek. The Gansevoort Hotel is straight across the road and has a very nice (but pretentious) bar at the top. Great cocktails. If you're into that sort of thing (cough).

The views from the top of the Rockerfeller Center are just as good as the Empire State, plus it's less expensive and you get to see the Empire State Building. Best at sunrise or sunset.

Get the free boat to Staten Island and take photos of the Statue of Liberty with your newly bought zoom lens. Have some quick beers in an authentic Cheers-like but scummy bar while waiting for the return ferry :drink:

Lastly but not least, have a hunt through ticketmaster etc for gigs. We saw Biffy Clyro preforming in a bar with about 200 people. Best gig I've ever been too!
