do you get any icons saying you have limited or no connectivity when you plug onto your router
Are you running fully patched xp sp2?
Have you had a look at task manager to make sure there arent any spurious processes running (sysinternals can be helpful for this)?
If your after free antivirus try running AVG alongside all the spyware/adaware stuff thats already been mentioned. My bets on something running on the OS because if it were the cable it would be constantly cack, instead of just cack after 5 mins.
