AOL Broadband soon......
Re: AOL Broadband soon......
Apart from the fact AOL is totally cr*p there is another reason why you shouldnt use it. AOL uses it's own propriety protocols to log into AOL and doesn't allow you to share the connection through another PC.
If I was you I would use another supplier....

That's another reason why I reccomended the Vigour 2200usb.
The USB modem connects directly to the Vigour which "dials up" your service provider, therefore your service provider will only see your 1 physical IP address. The router does the actual sharing of the connection, making it invisible to the outside world...All PC's on your network have different (sub?) IP addresses but the Vigour will only use the one to connect.

and mine too. NTL would only allow one IP address, so a hub wouldnt help, but the wireless router uses NAT so I can hang up to 32 PCs of it

Wireless a pain in the tits...
Get yourself a Vigour 2200usb router and cat5 the lot. Got one of these at home with 3 pc's and a laptop networked. Got it's own built in firewall. No messing about just plug the cat5 in your network/lan card/port then into the router. Connect the usb modem into the router, enter your userid and password into the seup of the router via explorer and your surfing...Easy peasy...Router never needs to be turned off or powered up just leave it on. Always ready...
Works for me anyway...
sorry but I personally wouldnt recommend any Vigor routers - I had a Vigor 2600WE and to say it was buggy is an understatement - the thing forever crashed - each firmware upgrade introduced more bugs than it fixed and tech support? don't even go there. Just look at the complaints on the Draytek web forum!!
I ditched this in the end and bought a Netgear DG824M and absolutely no problems at all. Works a treat with VPN access into work and with P2P apps unlike the Vigor!

Well the vigor2600WE is a wirless product and the 2200USB isn't. Maybe that's where the troubles lie...
I have had the 2200USB router for nearly 2 years now and I can honestly say that there hasn't been a single bit of trouble with it. P2P, VPN, Firmware updates are a doodle (if yo u really need to do them). Works all the time every time. For £100 I think you can't go wrong.
I can only speak about the model I have so I can't comment on the 2600WE one...
Maybe steer clear of the wireless one then...
But the one I have, I would recommend to anyone.

sorry, i'll be more precise - Mick is correct - mine is the wireless router and I meant the vigor 'Wireless' routers.
BTW i sent mine away 4 months ago and it still hasn't been returned!!

Re: AOL Broadband soon......
Yikes...... looks like ive started a heated debate.......
Im going to stick with AOL for 12months and see how it goes.... its all about trial and error but so far AOL dial-up had been spot on.
Yes maybe i should CAT5 the lot but i dont think dad will like truncing all over the house walls
What connection does the USB modem use...... to connect to the BT socket? RJ11 or RS45?
If it uses RJ45 im going to use the following option to get my PC in my bedroom wired up :-
Run CAT5 from BT wall socket in upper landing up the wall into loft then across the loft to my bedroom then down into my room to the PC.
My PC will then be on Broadband...... if the Modem uses RJ11 what is the best way for me to get the connection to my bedroom....... i dont have a BT line there

Re: AOL Broadband soon......
If AOL supply the Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem
then it connects to any BT extention via the filter

that you have to use.
Inbetween the modem and the filter it does use RJ45 connects so it would be possible to run RJ45 cable from the modem to the nearest BT socket in which must be plugged a filter. By the way you have to use a filter on every phone socket in the house.

Well if you do go with AOl you will be stuck with them for 12 months and what would be the point of networking your PC's when they don't support any sort of Network Sharing.
