If I crashed my £40k car which has sideguard, crumple zones, etc to the extent that the £50 helmet I have is useless, then I probably am not worse off. Why? Because I was obviously a few sandwiches short of a picnic beforehand anyway. Also, it ain't no fun paying for a car that is at the scrappers.

I see absolutely no reason to spend £400 on a helmet for recreational track days. They are for fun, you are not invinsible, just go at your own pace. If you can't, then don't do it.

Agreed..... If a helmet is going to protect you in a accident at a track then its gonna be a pretty nasty accident. So yeah we ware them cos we have to, and if your in a scuffle then you have tried too hard, if all else just dont bite, let him go, cos you can always fight another day.

Buy the most expensive helmet you can afford/want to pay. If I'm going to have a big off the last thing I want going through my mind is "will this helmet save me from being killed" I'll have more than enough on my mind wondering about the resulting insurance premium hike. Buy a helmet you can use for one than one activity (assuming you do more than one) that spreads the cost.

One word of warning. I hear Octogon are now enforcing the BSA rule that all helmets must comply to all the new regs which means a £50 helmet may not be approved. I'm still digging up the details as we speak so I'll post more when I find it.

Make sure to get one with a ACU gold sticker - that should suffice. Personally I always go for full face after seeing a guy mash his face up pretty bad at Cadwell after he dead butted the steering wheel when he was wearing an open face, full harness's should stop that kind of movement but enertia belts sometimes don't.

However, open face helmets do allow mouth to mouth to be done without the helmet being removed so you takes your choice really

Sorry to be so miserable about it but a helmet isn't a fashion statement.
