When you are the world's biggest economy, you can spin it as you like to keep your audience happy. BP Oil spill is like 9/11!!!!

Britain? I thought England were playing

And to contrast although we had a draw with Algeria, we feel like we have lost.

And we are laughing about it:

The England Team went to visit an orphanage in South Africa this morning "It's so good to put a smile on the faces of people with no hope, constantly struggling and facing the impossible" said Jamal Umboto aged 6.

sometimes when you 'win', you lose...

When the British were alerted to the presence of the new position the next day, they mounted an attack against them. After two assaults on the colonial lines were repulsed with significant British casualties, the British finally captured the positions on the third assault, after the defenders in the redoubt ran out of ammunition. The colonial forces retreated to Cambridge over Bunker Hill, suffering their most significant losses on Bunker Hill.

While the result was a victory for the British, they suffered a large amount of losses: over 800 wounded and 226 killed, including a notably large number of officers. The battle is seen as an example of a Pyrrhic victory, as while their immediate objective (the capture of Bunker Hill) was achieved, the loss of nearly a third of their forces did not significantly alter the state of siege. Meanwhile, colonial forces were able to retreat and regroup in good order having suffered few casualties. Furthermore, the battle demonstrated that relatively inexperienced colonial forces were willing and able to stand up to regular army troops in a pitched battle.

1st, the point is, a tie with a superior team is a 'win' of sorts, England was supposed to rout the US

2nd, as can seen by above, although England took the hill, they lost far more resources, and in addition, the seige was not broken, nor even significantly impacted...most would call that a draw or tie, even though the British suffered an order of magnitude more casualties...and gotthe hill which meant little in terms of strategy...

like most wars, pointless

why is it fashionable to ridicule and demean Americans?

^^ Because Amercians often believe they're the centre of the Universe?

Many Americans believe they virtually single-handedly won WW2.

How would you have reacted if you had seen a North Vietnamese paper with the same headline? Team USA should also have won that 'match', with their 'Superior Team', but quite clearly didn't.

A good write up on Bunker Hill though, and agree most wars are pointless, but unfortunately necessary...

your 'theory' would in this case appear to be BS
since it is the UK who thinks they are the 'high and mighty' and through this arrogence is ridiculing other countries...

would WWII been 'won' (if 50 mil dead is a 'win') without the US? who knows

what has VN got to do with it?
by your logic we did win...we lost 50k guys and killed 3 million of them
isn't that 'winning'?
I sure as hell wouldn't feel the need to ridicule VN...

wars are necessary? your logic escapes me...
Hitler 'needed' to invade Poland and kill millions of Jews?
Iraq needed to invade Kuwait?

The bottom line is, it was England who was playing in the match, and not "The British", and technically America was not formed at the time of Bunker Hill ;)

the English aren't British?

technically, no, realistically yes, they were fighting a war for independence and against what they (soon to be 'Americans') considered unfair oppression...you had 2 sides, the british, and the 'other', rebels, colonials, or soon to be Americans...

you're splitting hairs and using it as a justification to ridicule and demean Americans...
THAT is the bottom line...the publication is not a historical publication, it's almost a tabloid, something that is very popular in the UK...
so these minor liberties taken to spice up the front page of some 'rag' are not reason to insult an entire country...

perhaps we weren't sure who the enemy was?
judging from the attitudes proffered, it seems to be warranted...

that joke has been used in many configurations...

My (relative of choice) told me about (war of choice)
he said when the (enemy of choice) started shooting the (ally of choice) ducked
when the (ally of choice) started shooting the (enemy of choice) ducked
and when the (object of ridicule) started shooting EVERYBODY DUCKED!!!

pretty sure marksmenship skill is a function of training not nationality...
or are you implying something about calmness/focus under the duress of combat? 'courage'

you might want to look at international/Olympic shooting results
many more 'stars & bars' than 'union jacks'
