England v Turkey SOL 02/04/03

I am planning on traveling up to Sunderlands Statium of Light to watch England v Turkey on 02/04/2003.
Anyone else planning on going?
Anyone recommend any good hotels in that neck of the woods?
Would I be better of traveling up by train, car or fly into Newcastle?
Should I look to stay in Newcastle or Sunderland for a good night out after a football match?
All this is of course subject to getting a match day ticket.
I hope to have an option to purchase a total of 4 tickets if anyone wants one let me know.
