It's unfortunate to hear about the death of Steve Irwin but I have to say I'm not totally shocked. Was bound to happen one day but I was expecting it to be a snake or croc not a Stingray.

i think he was the type of bloke we'd all like to emulate if we had the guts and opportunity. as said before, one of lifes loons and this world will be a great deal duller without him

I think you've got that just right Dave.

I must confess to watching his shows half expecting him to end up with a few cuts and bruises.

From reading the BBC news report, it seems he was very unlucky indeed. Sad.

Seemed like an all round nice guy, who only did good things by promoting awareness of the natural world....even if his style was a bit different to David Attenborough !

Agree...freakish way to go...he must have been manhandling the ray for it to have got its barb near his heart !

I think in this day and age it's very rare to find a celebrity who hasn't had some form of scandal attached to them, perhaps that's part of the attraction.

ive spoken to a family member that works for the austrailian CSI and apparently it hit the lower left side of his heart and killed him within seconds..there,s talk of him getting a state funeral and rightly so..
its so ironic that the very thing that made him famous (croc's and snakes ) didnt kill him..
