Home Cinema Upgrade

Post by Paulm » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:06 pm

I am thinking of upgrading my current Home cinema.

I have a Optima Themescene H30a Projector, it has an excellent picture but is a year old and I fancy something new.

Any ideas / recommendations?

You can have a Sim 2 C3X 3 chip DLP which is about £10k and has HD imputs to 720, or you can go for the new HT3000 which is 1080p compliant. Do NOT go for the new Sony Ruby (VW100) though. It is 1080p and only 6k but replacement bulbs are £2.5k and last 2000hrs. The other bargain is the In Focus 777 which is now half price at £10k and has upgraded chips (it is on the large size though)

I would love a 3 chip DLP. I do see slight rainbows with my DLP but I am lucky they never hurt my eyes or give me sore heads.

I can upscale to 1080 but it seems to flicker so I use 720 and all is fine.

As for spending 10k on a projector as much as I would love to it just aint going to happen. My pockets are nowhere near that deep :(

What a great forum... I was just going to post a thread about advice on all this stuff (sorry to hijack this one)

We've finally found a house after a year of looking and want to completely renovate and therefore have some nice mod cons. I was wondering if someone could spare a few moments and type up some basics of what to look for in a home cinema set up, or a good company in the Wiltshire area? I'm specifically thinking projector(s) but open to allsorts. The rooms are big, 30ftx30ft on average. Probably two that we would use for TV, kitchen and sitting room. (10k twice might be pushing it!) It's an Edwardian house, hence thinking of projectors to avoid TV's looking out of place. I'm not neccesarily looking for the super hi-end specialist sound/picture, but obviously want it to be pretty bloody good, as the chicks on Hollyoaks are especially deserving. Very many thanks, Bob.

I have a fairly basic set-up in my home cinema, but also recomend the SIM range of projectors. I have a HT200, electric screen and a fairly mid-range 7.1 sysytem. Almost all KEF speakers, Pioneer AV-1, etc..

I was lucky in that I renovated the basement with my office drum room and cinema so had the opportunity to hide all cables and technology. The problem is technology waits for no man so I am now looking at different ways to get the HD around the house without to much destruction. The Basement is the technology hub of the house so I need to start looking at other options, the last thing I need is hacking into the walls and then making good.

Anyway, if you are really flush, and I know several of you are!! then I would definately go and see JR. He has all the gear Krell etc etc. TBH just going into his shop gives me a semi. Out of my league - but deffo lovely lovely stuff, the kind of stuff you just want to smell and touch. :bash:

Thanks Tom does he have a website? Rather than bother him with stupid questions, I perhaps need to learn a bit more first...

thanks, very interesting and obviously smart stuff. Looks way beyond my needs though, real purists gear that I would never understand... I think I need more 'smart home' advice, projectors seem popular and the way to go. I just hate wires... I'll see if the wife is prepared to go to that infocus one!

My projector and 7 foot screen cost less than £1500 and I must say the picture is excellent.

Infocus projectors are very very good and popular as are SIM but pretty expensive.

I wanted a DLP one as you see less screen door on them but some can see rainbows that hurt your eyes and can give headaches. I can see rainbows but only if I look for them and will deffo have DLP again.

I went to the cinema with the kids the other day and I must say my picture is far better than the cinema any day ( not quit so big though  )

I have mission speakers and Sony surround amp and am very happy with my setup, but just fancy a new projector. You know the score

go onto avforums.com the info on there is awesome
