Number plate search

Gents,
How do I go about finding out who owns a specific number plate, so I could make them an offer they can't refuse .
I've tried all the regular number plate websites for this specific number, but unfortunately it is unavailable.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Got a mate in the Police? Otherwise you're stuffed. We had the same problems tracking down R54 *** plates for RS4 owners.
If you find a way, let us know.

Mmmmm i think Phil is right about asking the police, their is away around it but its risky, simply ring a police station and say that someone hit your car and you got the reg number be would like to do it off the insurance, give them the reg and get the address this has not been tested though
What about DVLA?

Try
http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/ for 'available' number plates from DVLA. It has a search facility.
Can't help you with tracking down a car owner by his number plate. If a crime was commited it is easy. The privacy rules are there to protect people at the end of the day so it might not be worth trying. Approach personalised plate resellers as they might be able to help if you are after something really specific.
Good luck

If you go to an online insurance company and get a quote to insure a car with the number plate you may be able to find the make and model of the car that has the plate attached from the insurers web site.
You could then find out what area in the country the number plate was issued and then phone round the main dealers in that area to try and see if they were the supplying dealer.
If they were the supplying dealer maybe a good drink would refresh their mermory as to who purchased the car.

Take a look on NewReg they have a was it issued section, which is a good start,
If issued only options are to see if they can find it for or find a friendly copper.
If not issued then contact DVLA

Gents,
Plate was issued in August 1998 in Bootle ( BD5DOM, info courtesy of Newreg.com). This website also offers you the opportunity to get them to aquire this plate on your behalf. So have filled in my details and will wait to see what happens. In the meantime, I'll try the Tanoga way and see if I can establish the make and model.
If no joy, then as suggested will find myself a freindly copper and offer him/her a little tickle for some info.
If all else fails then I'm sure someone driving this reg, accidently went into the back of the missus car, but forgot to leave their address when swapping details
