Right now then, get this... Believe it or not, the car is now going up in price... Its £7,095 if anyone wants a very quick sale.
The reason being that I've just committed a deposit for some further subtle, yet sublime modifications that should have the car running in the region of 420 bhp by the end of the month. After the enhancements, the car will still tentatively be for sale so long as it stands me in close to what I'm planning to spend on it.
On the other hand, once the output is tweaked, I will happily then keep the car for another 10-15 months and sell it towards the end of the year when I am projecting that interest rates will be closer to 4.5% (watch this space) and people will be feeling more adventurous about buying this sort of high performing sports saloon - erm... so as you can see... I've, er, got it all planned out(!)

Strange indeed! If it wasn't selling at £6,845 then I don't think you'll pull in those buyers at £7095.
Do you think it will stand more chance of selling for a £3000 or so higher price because of the K04 upgrade? Didn't Tartan Robs 460ish BHP monster go for around £8000?
Just my observations that all. Wouldn't want you to do the upgrade but come selling time you can't get anywhere near what you want for it.
ps I think it's worth £7000 all day long but just a really bad time to sell.

Personally, I'd say drop your price to just under £7k on Auto Trader and PH if you really need to get rid of it quickly because the extra £100 on the price is a physchological barrier and not worth that much to you in the long run. What looks better £7095 or £6995? Plus you're filtering yourself out of the up to £7k category for the sake of £100.
HOWEVER, your car is NOT overpriced (unlike a LOT of the other S4's I've seen), £7k is about right for that spec, mileage etc, these cars just don't sell quickly (especially just after Xmas).
Putting K04's on may or may not help you to sell it, but just remember that you're really getting into a specialist market where you really will have to find someone who wants that particular spec. I'd say leave it as it is and just wait it out, someone will come along soon enough. These cars are incredibly rare (I've been looking for low mileage, noggy blue, black interior for 6 months) and you just need to wait around for someone who wants your car.

To make 420BHP you'll need to change the turbos, intercoolers, injectors & fuel pump plus a remap. All of this is going to cost you significantly more than £3000. I recently sold my V plate (Nov 99) 130K mile black saloon with 420BHP + brakes, suspension etc mods for £8500. I might have got £500 more if I wanted to hold out.
You figures don't add up and if you do the 420BHP mod you'll need to charge close on £12K to get your money back (£7K + 420BHP cost). If you want a 420BHP car then go and do it, if you want to sell the car this isn't the way to make money.

Gents where were you when I was pondering this very issue in the silent confines of my foolish mind??
You are of course, all, absolutely right and I look even more of a monkey than my genes saw to in the first place.
Thanks very much for all the advice, perhaps I ought to give this some more thought. I did have some vague notion that the cost of the work and money I'd lose doing it/eventually selling would still be considerably less than the money I'd lose over the same period buying/modding and selling an RS4 with similar performance...
