They seem to be up for about £50 on eBay!
I think I paid over 3 times that for a 2nd hand one a couple of years ago. Been looking high and low for mine but at that price I might just buy another.

Most of the eBay ones are fake. They might work or they might not, but more importantly they are ripping off Ross-Tech - who do all the hard work, and provide the software for free download with an authorised cable. It's only fair to pay for the R&D, and avoid a lemon in the process...

+1

There is a genuine one on the TT forum (SWMBO owns one) for £190.

They do not provide the software for free; when you pay nearly £400 for a £20 cable you are are paying for the software, it's definitely not free! I know there is a free version but that is paid for by all the people who have bought genuine cables.

The genuine interface can be bought brand new for just £250, not sure where you have seen the £400 quoted?

For your money you get free lifetime support (via email) and free updates every few months, it costs a fraction what the dealers VAS / ODIS costs and yet it will do equally as much if not more. (VCDS can do certain things the dealer stuff cannot and vice versa)
However anyone can download the software without owning any cable at all, the software is free, you just can’t connect it to a car successfully without a suitable cable.

Not to mention the R&D that is constantly being put in.

Agree that £250 sounds about right - you can even buy direct from Ross-Tech and have it shipped FedEx International Priority for $400 / £255

Obviously the cost of the cable subsidises all of the software R&D, but without one you hold back the other. If everyone bought a fake, there's be no development, none of the regular updates, and fairly soon no VCDS

Don't bother Mike, dodgy as owt. I ordered one from Amazon, needless to say i wasted hours trying to get it to work and ended up returning it and getting a refund :)

I'm not arguing what the money gets spent on, just the wording that you get free software, or free updates or free support. It's not free, you've paid for it.

Apologies, when I said nearly £400 I thought Ross Tech sold them for £370. Looking at their website it is acutally 350 but that it dollars not pounds.
Still not free though!

- fact. You are free to download it, and so is anyone else.
Dom81 wrote:It's only fair to pay for the R&D
- yep, that's what the charge is for. I'm not saying the software costs you nothing if you buy a registered lead - of course it does. It's that, just because someone can get away without paying for it (due to their distribution method - free download) doesn't mean they should...
