Putting into Neutral

Post by goram » Tue Nov 22, 2022 10:10 am

Should I be putting the beast into neutral when I'm sat in traffic?

All my previous autos had stop/start so never really gave it a thought....

I had an auto box repaired several years ago, albeit on an older car before stop start had even been thought of  and I asked the very same question - the gearbox place basically said 'why would you want to do it - they are designed to stay in drive whilst stationary with your foot on the footbrake'. I guess the length of time you are stationary has to be taken into consideration, but in usual traffic conjestion hold ups, then keeping it in D shouldnt cause any issues at all. If you are held up for more than a couple of minutes, then I would probably put it in N or P just for personal comfort....
If the brakes were very hot, then I would definately not sit with the foot brake applied for any length of time because of the risk of brake pad material transfering the to disc face, eventually resulting in a 'kicking' through the brake pedal from a build up of pad friction material, but that is a totally different topic.......
