One shock or Two

Post by stuartbarriskell » Thu Oct 20, 2022 5:28 pm

I've grafted this onto a new post as I'm looking for and would appreciate some opinions

So N/S/F is leaking, replacement Inc hoses etc, drain Full system down and recharge both systems their quoting £1540.00 inclusive of VAT

Which brought into question the rattles on the rear of which N/S/R is noisier thus confusing me due to the cross-chassis suspension layout !..

I haven't ever really been a fan of doing one side on a suspension overhaul, I thought in for a penny in for 50p, get the two fronts done, but Andy the owner advised to just do NSF, drain and recharge the full system see how it goes, which is reasonable considering the cost per corner, I'll give him that for not trying to lever an additional £1500 out of me, he reckons a recharge should sort out the rear. I have always changed shocks as a pair.

Would like to hear any thoughts on this..

Cheers

Cheers for the reply goram...

I did initially, but having thought things through It's definitely the soft option, I was thinking one shock has done zero miles and one 28k, so there is wear in the valves, piston and associated internals on that shock that in itself would create an imbalance... mind the shocks are 8 years old too..

Along the same lines, I'd never fit one brake disc unless the other was new or nearly new...

What's your thinking on that...

Thought about coilovers? If you're keen to replace both sides, then that should get you a set of KWs - and sort the other 2 while you're at it. If/when one of my dampers goes, that's the route I'll be going down!

Hey mate, the thought had crossed my mind, but I'd like to keep the car as it came out the factory so haven't really delved into the coilover world.

As a side issue I've a bit of affinity with Ohlins from my bikes, would probably have leant towards them.

It's a hard one to swallow mind you when you can buy a full set circa £2300.00 plus the cancellation module ! Image

Mines going in for a service and check for the dreaded drc knock next week. My man maths is praying for top mounts but if I were a betting man I'll be going all in on drc related!

I'm I new owner so it's all new to me lol

If it was me (and could well be next week), at £1500 a corner, I'd be doing a corner at a time and suck it see ;)

Let me know how you get on, as far as my scenario goes, I made my mind up earlier today, against my better judgement I'm going for NSF, drain full system and recharge, then suck it and see.

Was salivating over a full set of Ohlins last night well for 10 minutes, by fxxx they look good, just can't bring myself to go down that route.. 3 grand gets four corners plus error delete.. Bargaaaain.

Rebuilt a ZX10R during lockdown and upgraded the rear with a hand built to order Nitron that was 900 plus for my ZX10R track bike..so guess I can't moan shelling that out for the car.. I got Stickers with it too !ImageImage

If its knocking during "normal' Road use I'd say its probably one of the shocks.. I'm using a well regarded aftermarket garage who specialise in RSs.. are you using a dealer ?... be interested in knowing your costs..

I found out the cost of new OE front calipers.. circa 900 ea and that's trade Image

How are you getting on Stuart?

I hope all turned out ok, ie cheap and effective...

Low mileage '13 car here, at the last two services the dealer has mentioned a misting on the shocks but reckoned that was ok "many left the factory like that sir". Car drives perfectly and no knocks or rattles, so I'll take his word for it.

Morning mate, cars in as we speak, against my better judgement I opted just to do the NSF, full drain and recharge of both systems, so hopefully it makes a huge difference, if not I'll need to opt to work my way round the car. I would have got the 4 done had I the money, but your looking at 6.5k.. I'll report my findings when I pick it up later today..

Well Holy <beep> !... my car is TOTALLY transformed... could tell within 100 yds that there was no rattling, knocking or whatever from the suspension system. The car feels really firm and responsive with no noises whatsoever and that was me deliberately driving over some rougher tarmaced areas on the 12 mile drive home, a recharge definitely resolved the remaining issues.

Andy the owner showed me the old strut, it was leaking and the fluid had gotten into the electronic plug on the accumulator too. The plug is out of shot on the other side of the leg..

1600 quid almost, but well spent in my mind !... delighted with the results..

Excellent news!
Well, as excellent as a £1.6k bill can be, I suppose.
It's always good when the money spent results in a tangible feel and improvement, - most of the time it's just the bill and a polythene seat cover.

Delighted with it, had lived with suspension rattling for too long tbh..even though I've had the car less than 2 months ..

Hi mate, you mean which way would it sit on the car ?.. if so just as you see it, the top of the piston has a threaded end for mounting the assembly together and retaining the spring in place..

Found one online, it would be mounted exactly as you see it here.. the control arms bolt onto that top mounting plate, which in turn bolts onto the body, the bottom onto the hub and subsequent arms..

This shows pretty much the full assembly Inc shaft and hub assy, bit of artwork in those control arms lol..
