Hello,
Am wondering about the following: by when is the engine warm enough to allow higher rev's?

The gauge on the dash shows the water temperature. There is no gauge for engine oil. Why not? Is water temperature a reliable enough indication for the engine oil temperature?

Good point this. I have always waited for the water temp gauge to reach normal temp before pushing an engine properly. But this is only water temp, guessing oil takes longer to reach temp so therefore damage is being done?!
Or is modern day oil better so not to take long to reach operating temp? Interested. Have also been told not to idle an engine to temp as this does do wear damage, any thoughts

Oil takes quite a bit longer to warm up, I would say 50% longer.

You can activate the lap timer which has oil temp on it via Vagcom.

Activate lap timer... Could you please elaborate? I would need to purchase the diagnosis hardware, measure the time before the oil reaches a certain temperature and then have a timer show this to the driver?

i'm fairly sure I read it in the instruction manual (You don't need to do anything fancy, unless a previous owner has altered mine). There's a button on the bottom of the right hand stalk (wipers), press that and it will cycle between lap timer, oil temp, and two trip counters (or something similar), but (anecdotally) as G30001 says, water comes up to temp in about 5 mins, oil takes 10-15 mins depending on what sort of driving you're doing

Re idling the engine to operating temperature being a bad idea, my understanding has always been that when the engine is cold it's using a fuel enriched mixture to run and this is good at washing oil from the bores. With the engine under load, ie driving, this time is reduced so the bores are better protected sooner.

Evening all, tried the lap timer when leaving work, amazed how longer the oil took to get up to temp, up to 10 mins longer!! Doesn’t show until 60 degrees, got to 105 - 107 degrees when up to temp. Guess that’s normal?
