Thoughts on carbon clean?

Post by Scammo1 » Sun May 09, 2021 9:09 pm

What’s your guys views on when to think about a carbon clean for the B8?

I know this is pretty much mandatory on the B7, but not sure if there’s a recommended mileage to hit before having to do this?

My B8 is only on 30k and driving fine i.e no lack of power. Want to be cautious but also don’t want to waste money.

I've had the same thought, but I suppose the only way to find out if it needs it is to get the inlet manifold off and have a looky see?

Mine B8 done at 70kmiles and it was night and day... torque over 6krpm came back even if the carbon build was quite low...
So finally, I would say it has to be done when the torque decrease between 6 and 8krpm!

I've done a carbon clean myself on my RS4 B8, my mileage was at 40k there was some carbon build up so I think it's well worth doing as my car runs better than ever !
My car was running ok before but if you want to keep max bhp and torque then it's still a must even on the b8's to keep them in tip top Condition ! ImageImageImageImage

 If you had a loss of 40hp that could be hard to spot if you had lead boots. Agreed, a dyno run is probably the best way forward. Dano day anyone?

Trouble is you need a base line on the dyno when the car was in good condition and everything was runing as it should be.

If you don't have a base line then your not going to know if the power is down or by how much as most of our car do not produce the power that Audi claims !!

I was thinking more to look at the curve than actual power as there are many variables.

If the curve does not pick up at the top as expected it probably needs doing.

To be honest I will probably get it done anyway as it is my new baby and it will also be getting a full fluid change.

Who do people recommend for this?

I’ve seen services offered by MRC, Awesome & Regal but not sure if anyone offered a better service than the rest.

Do you have links to the blast pot and adaptor you used to do the cleaning?

I did not do mine with a walnut blaster I'm afraid.
I done it by hand with brushes and it was pretty easy to be honest I just let the cleaner sit for a hour then got to work I got the brushing kit from JHM.

For those of us less confident with the spanners- and too scared to take the inlet off ourselves, what was the rough price charged by a pro to do this?
From what I've seen the cost usually includes before and after dyno runs.

Maybe we can get a group discount :D

This is the next thing I want to have done to mine as now coming up to 40k.
I had the big service done early last year and because of the low millage this year my maintenance costs are basically zero so it makes sense to have it done now.
Does anybody know of a reputable place to have it done in Norfolk or Suffolk?

Looking to get this done at some point soon. Any recommendations from anyone in the Yorkshire area or surroundings?
Thanks
