DSG Gearbox

Post by Tenz0 » Fri Mar 19, 2021 11:47 am

Hello all,

Interested to know a little more about how the DSG behaves. Watched an interesting video (posted somewhere here) from an engineering perspective. I've noted some strange shifts, but I think that can be down to it second guessing my next change incorrectly - not too much concern and auto seems to be just fine.

However the main area of concern I have is in manual mode for example:

Cruising at 3k RPM in D6 with a light touch on the accelerator, even coasting.
Downshift and pressing the accelerator at the same time causes a notable hesitation/slow down before then accelerating away.
If I downshift, then accelerate, it's fine.
If I accelerate, then downshift, it's fine.

The issue appears when I do them together - is that just the nature of the gearbox, or something a little more sinister?

I think the box can be quite clunky at times and obviously it’s not as capable as a human.

Downshifting under acceleration is my preferred choice tbh, much slicker. I guess if you cruising in D6 the box would have pre selected 7?

My gearbox doesn't show that trait. I tried it yesterday afternoon. But it might be software related - maybe an update is required?

What I can tell you (after the cars first DSG oil and filter change), is that it shifts more smoothly.

Sloppy engine and transmission mounts add to erratic behaviour.

I think my engine mount has popped (being seen next week) and ever since my gearbox has been all over the Shop.

I know of several people who have said transmission mount inserts cure the 2 to 1 shunt and hesitation issues.

I find upshifts whether fast or slow are super smooth but down shifts, esp in sport mode, can be a bit clunky. Most noticeable when I am off the throttle and have either manually changed down or the software has decided to shift down.

I do find sport mode too aggressive most of the time. If driving through town at 30 it holds on to 2nd and in general the downshifts aren't subtle! Would prefer it if in sport mode it 'calmed down' until you flex the throttle a bit and then got super sporty.

Do others find that when on a constant throttle / steady speed in sport mode it is about 2 or more gears lower than when in normal mode?

The gear change is more clunky in sports mode as the wet clutch is clamped 100% or so or it would slip under pressure where as in comfort mode it’s smoother as it lets the clutch slip slightly so best not drive aggressive in comfort mode as it will eventually wear the clutch, in auto the gearbox will adjust accordingly to your driving, I think this is accurate 😂
