Hi all, car in at audi atm and been told rear discs are needing changed because the wear indicators show they need changed. Sounds implausible to me, didn’t think the b8 discs had wear indicators??? Thoughts or advice?

Might be worth challenging audi to what % worn they are and how many miles are safely left. Would think that any warning would be visible to you on the dashboard if they are seriously worn. Keep in mind it's a quick car and these are your brakes though!

yes i would take the Audi centres brake ware with a pinch of salt I've had a few times they tried to get me to change my disks with less the half wear on them as i regularly check the thickness when changing my tyres from winter to summer

Hi Brooner, know that the new generation discs have recessed holes for wear but wasn’t sure about the b8. Always irritates me when they use “ discs corroded, need changed, worn out “ simple thickness measurement would be a lot more quantitative. Will ask them lol

They do have wear sensors one on passenger side front and one on drivers rear wheel that's unless they have been taken out by someone before you to fit different pads ?
Also be careful as Audi love our cars for the brakes as its an easy cash in for them ask to see via a gauge what mm's are left on them fronts new are 34mm worn out is 32.4 mm but a lot go a little more than that, rears are 22mm new but can't think what the worn limit is of the top of my head 20.8 /21mm ??

Rear min wear is 20mm.

Agree that it’s best to get them measured as a thickness gauge can’t lie!

Changed mine recently and Audi wanted over £1k. Luckily dealer I bought the car from covered it.

Similar situation happened to me. Took the car to my reliable indie who said disc were fine but the pads needed changing. Definately get a second opinion.

Did any other RS model come with the wavy discs?

Seems Audi dropped them pretty quick as new RS4 doesn’t have them

Interesting to note these are not handed on the B8, you may notice they run the wrong way on one side.

There was a previous comment that they run at different temperatures - hardly surprising if the fins are running backwards. Even my old 3.2 TT had handed front discs!

Ah - I think they are meant to be handed for the exact reason that otherwise the vanes go backwards .

I found a photo of some genuine ones with a direction arrow: Image

The arrows go both ways iirc!!
