Gearbox lurching/knocking in 1st gear

Post by SHS » Wed Feb 06, 2019 1:30 pm

Very recently my car has started doing some odd things with the revs and in particular when moving to or from standstill:
- when moving off there appears to be a slight delay with a knock and then lurch forward in first gear. Its not horredous but you can feel a slight hesitation under foot.
- the reverse also seems to happen when coming to a stop, such that its seems to not know to be in first gear and seems to suddenly jump into it but try and push the car forward as you are braking - almost like counteracting the braking which is not ideal in traffic.
- the other day when stopping on a hill the revs were lumpy and jumping up and down.

Otherwise the gear changes are smooth and fine, but seems to be an issue with slowing down and then taking off again.

I have a audi warranty with the small excess, but just seeing if anyone has experienced similar issues as the dealership take ages to book things in and never have a courtesy car available and when they do its a tiny A1 which barely fits the child seat in, let alone the pram.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Oh dear sounds very familiar. Good job you have warranty, if it is what I think it is its an expensive repair.

How old is your car, how many miles?

Read this:

https://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph ... leet/29983

Chris's car was OY09 SYC; my old S4 OY09 SYJ

If it is the same, Audi will:

1. Ask for the gearbox oil to be changed if not done recently (at your cost)
2. Try to recalibrate the gearbox
3. If these fail replace the DSG mechatronics

Part was £3k plus fitting. On long lead time when I needed one (5 to 6 weeks). Service Manager at my dealership in Scotland's Capital was properly awful*, but his boss was great, got me the part quickly and offered to pay 60% of the cost.

* My car was damaged when then dealer did their complimentary wash resulting in a bonnet respray at £500. Service Manager refused to consider covering part or all of the cost

Thanks very much for that - sounds very similar and some useful info.

Car is on 49k. Just had an oil service at Audi as well so at least they can’t say any issues with that (unless that has been a contributing factor).

Will ring them and see what they say. Will be the usual fee for the inspection no doubt with the wait to be booked in and no replacement car. What a hassle but at least I have the warranty!

Mine had the same as well. Plenty of threads on here. Take it to Audi and ask them to test the gearbox oil for glycol. There is a tpi on it.

Okay update on this. Finally got the car looked at and new gearbox needed, parts on back order from Germany so still have to wait a couple of weeks for them to arrive. Audi have approved the works under the warranty though so very glad I have that in place as otherwise would have been very expansive (they quote just under 1k to take the gearbox out to have a look at it).

In the meantime I have a new rs3 to run around in. What a fantastically fun car that is, though I’m not convinced about the exhaust note and with two kids the boots not up to much. Has made me realise how comically bad the mpg on a naturally aspirated v8 is as well!

Good to hear Audi are supporting the gearbox. Out of interest were you given RS3 by dealer of Audi UK?

Basically the dealer had a courtesy diesel a3 and once they saw there was an issue and needed more than a day they contacted vw car service or something like that who were excellent. Rang me up and said as an RS owner you can have whatever you want difficulty is finding stock, but they have various high end rental companies. Delivered the rs3 to me and sorted it all out so very easy process. So far can’t complain about how it’s been handled other than just taking a while

Luckily for you, in the 15 weeks mine been on and off the road since 23rd December 2018 I have not had an RS car. Currently I am in a bog standard A6 with no sat nav!

Got the car back and it’s silky smooth with the gear change, realised it’s probably always had a slight issue in two years of ownership so amazing to use now.

One problem - my wife put the front of the car into another, causing cracked grill but also the bonnet has popped up and now not aligned properly so needs a bit of manipulation. Anyone know anyone that could do such work in the Essex/NE London area?

After all this - house broken into and keys stolen. Car was pushed off the drive and rolled down the road by 3 guys. If anyone see a seprang blue RS4 with RS04 numberplate in the Woodford/Essex area it’s probably mine. Bastards

Sorry to hear that. I did see a sepang blue car with RS04 as the first four digits at the weekend, but it was up north in a small town called Disley close to the High Peak.
