Strange noise coming from front of car
Strange noise coming from front of car
For a while now I've been conscious of a strange noise coming from the front of the car. It increases with road speed, but not revs, so it's not directly linked to the engine noise (and it's coming from the front of the car, so isn't anything to do with the exhaust). I had a long drive over the weekend and I think it's getting worse.
I wonder if it's something to do with bearings or maybe a belt on the engine, but I really am a total mechanical novice, so i don't have a clue.
Any ideas what it might be? I will be taking it to a dealer shortly, but thought I'd ask here for advice first!
Also, on occasion I've had an EPC error (maximum 6,000rpm), but this immediately disappears when you turn the engine off and back on.
After having one light replaced under warranty (see other thread), I've now got a warning for the other light, presumably the same problem as before. Last time I was told this wasn't a warranty item, but a fault occurring on both lights on a car less than 5 years old appears unacceptable for this class of vehicle.
Also, paint is peeling off the front wheels - anyone had wheels replaced under warranty?!
I still love the car, but these faults are frustrating!

I get a strange noise from round about the passenger seat, but only when SWMBO is in the car. More annoying than strange
Your noise could be bearings. Is it constant at speed? Any more info?

Re: Strange noise coming from front of car
I had the crown wheel centre differential bearing go bad, at only 4.5k miles. That gave a similar road speed related whine. Yours may differ and could be something like a wheel bearing but if you can replicate the noise reliably, then get it looked at by Audi whilst still under warranty.
EPC light would most likely to have logged a fault code, so get them (Audi) to print the fault codes and we could go from there. As that could really be a number of things, I'm currently investigating similar and my fault code is for stuck open manifold flaps.
The Audi factory wheel finish is pretty good, so chances are that yours may have been refurbished if you’re not the first owner. So a warranty claim against Audi would be un-successful and the next port of call would be whoever supplied the car to you.

Thanks for this. The car is now booked in to be looked at, so will see what they say. Likewise about the fault code.Surrey Sam wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 8:48 pmI had the crown wheel centre differential bearing go bad, at only 4.5k miles. That gave a similar road speed related whine. I bought the car as an approved Audi last March, but when the car was with my local dealer to investigate the light issue, they performed an overall health check and spotted that two of the wheels had been welded, which is a breach of the Audi approved used car policy. The supplying dealer then agreed to replace those two wheels, which are the ones I believe are now peeling. This is less than 6 months after the wheels were replaced, so I think i have a good case to reject them under warranty.
Anyone know the approximate cost of a new warranty (the car will be 5 years old with 50k miles).
Cheers.

Enter the various information on your car and you will get a price from Audi. There are 2 options which are: "All Component Cover" and "Named Component Cover" and you will get a price.
For info. My car is a 64 plate, has done 31,700 miles and we travel less than 10k per year. I selected "All Component Cover" with a £250 excess and my price was £680.62

You'd certainly have a strong case...IF...the supplying dealer replaced with new ones. The fact that the paint finish is failing 6 months in, tells me they didn't

Got the photos and itemised service invoice from pre-sales preparation. 4 rushed powder coated refurbishments. And it's shocking. I'm currently going through a complaint with Audi UK for several things including this. So I've got a case you think? The brakes I'm going to fight for mind you. Not hijacking the thread. Just that rerurbs can fail.
Can see the obvious but also the coating in the tyre wall. Didn't even let it dry properly. The coating inside the wheel only covers the faces too. Not the whole wheel. So it was always gonna come away regardless of the shocking job on the faces.

Yes, standard 'trade' practice unfortunately. V-Spokes were never available in hyper silver from factory, only Rotors but you/anyone would never know that.

I thought these were the 'polished' V spokes? Not the Titanium finish ones obviously. Either way, all 3 branches in the north I've had issues with have been CC'd into the complaint. Ugh. Ya just shouldn't have to fight should ya? I won't go back to Audi. Exotic specialists now. They had the spec I wanted but will be even MORE patient next time.

Re: Strange noise coming from front of car
Factory titanium are the diamond cut ones.
They can only be safely refurbished once, after that. Those will then get painted 100% titanium, silver or any other colour, as there's no longer the material left to paint titanium and then diamond cut the design.
See this image below, the diamond cut process has run out of material for the wheel design, leaving the refurbishing company trying to cover it up.

I feel a bit duped. I think I understand why the real deal is so pricey now. Like yours for example.

I did say when you bought the car that they had been painted as that wasn't a factory option.Thundercliffe81 wrote:Ahhhh.Surrey Sam wrote:Yes, standard 'trade' practice unfortunately. V-Spokes were never available in hyper silver from factory, only Rotors but you/anyone would never know that.

By the looks of things very badly!
Zooming into your picture I can see why they have been painted as there is no metal left to cut.
As Sam said above and shows in his picture.
