Audi Ceramic

Post by The Gasman » Thu Dec 20, 2018 8:30 am

Hello. New to this site so sorry if it’s not put in the right place. I’m looking at buying an rs4 b8 with ceramic discs. Oem fitment audi ceramic kit. Is this a good set up? I know they are and an expensive option from new and I know how much they are to replace 😬. should I sell them off for the standard set or stick with them.

Any advice. It’s a 2012 b8 rs4.
Many thanks.

You need to replace callipers and discs if your looking to swap. The wear cannot be measured on thickness, it goes by weight so sell discs that old might be difficult. They should be good for 100k with regular pad replacements and the reduced mass should help handling and performance is supposed to be excellent as they don’t groove or polish like steel discs.

100k wow. Pads are £345.31 inc vat per side I’m told by the local Audi parts supplier. Seem expensive but could well be a long life product.

Go for it, ceramics is a highly desirable option. Better braking and no brake dust! Just make sure they are not damaged.

Got ceramics on mine. Had them on my B7 too and they were superb. As said, performance is great, no dust (important), no rust (also important for me), the chance of brake judder issues is virtually none existent (extremely important!) and they look good (equally important!). I then searched for a B8 back in 2015 with them when I changed cars. Was lucky and got one of the last cars produced with ceramics (production stopped around October 2014). Obviously, good B8's are now becoming harder to find, and the ceramic option narrows the availablility down considerably too. If it ticks all other boxes, I would go for it, without question.

Discs look a bit crazed. Seem like there is loads of life in the disc just not sure I’ve heard the ceramic discs have this effect? Anyone running them and theirs look similar? Post some images of you could.

You can clearly see the ‘wear’ dot, they need to be weighed to check how much content (life) is left in the disc.

Wear rate looks fine. I think some harsh chemicals have been used a fair bit on them though, from looking at the rusty pad carrier and disc bobbins. I'd try to avoid spraying any wheel cleaners/fallout removers/strong APC solutions on to any disc and calliper for this reason alone.
