RS4 feels slow??!?

Post by Rogerg10 » Sun Aug 05, 2018 8:52 pm

Hi

I’ve had my rs4 for a couple of weeks now and like it but... it does seem slow! It’s a 2014 on 38k, purchased from Audi. One thing that strikes me is how quiet it is and how as you rev it higher past 5k it seems to get quieter?! Are they all like this? It’s got the sports exhaust but that also seems quite quiet! I’ve come for a C63 pp+ and there does seem to be quite a difference in performance. I’ve read about carbon build up, is there any way to check this as for nearly 450hp it does seem that a few horses may if escaped!!!

Sounds strange as an rs3 went past and it sounded way better which shouldn’t be the case with a v8

How are the gearbox shifts? Any clunky shifts between 1st and 2nd?

I doubt it would be the engine with an issue but the gearbox is known to suffer from ATF radiator failing and leaking coolant into the gearbox oil which contaminates the clutches. Does the car feel like it is being held back at all?

There is a TPI for the gearbox issue. They test for Glycol in the gearbox oil. I would take it back to Audi and get them to look at it.

Has the various gearbox and diff oils all been completed on schedule? They should have all been done by 38K at least once.

Had this issue with mine. The car just didn't feel right and felt like it was being held back. Managed to get it sorted and the car felt fantastic afterwards.

It’s going back to Audi tomorrow to fix a number of issues, worst being the steering being off centre!

In thing I noticed is that people in here mention pops and bangs on up and downshift but I don’t get any of it!?? It does a ‘whump’ noise as it changes down but that’s it!

P.s gearbox feels ok- no suspect noises. Funny thing I used to have a s4 b6 which was also a v8 and that sounded better!!?!

As for the exhaust sound being quite, check that the valves in the exhuast have not seized closed? and failing that open the compartment where the tyre inflator/tool kit is in the boot and disconnect the vac lines to the exhaust valves and cap them off with a golf tee or M5 bolt which keeps the flaps open all the time, much better!!

Very smart
I had a C63 PP MRC tuned to 530PS. I went back to a B7 RS4 and didn't think it was slow. Did you not test drive your RS4 B8 before buying it.

Well the car has now gone back to Audi for good! Quite a few issues with the car that need quite a bit spent on it. They took the option to return for refund. I took a punt on a long distance sale with delivery, thinking it was from Audi it would be ok but sadly not.

Well I'm glad you got a refund but the hassle and disappointment ain't good, in it. What a shame as it looked like a smart RS4 B8 bread van.

Shame it didn't work out, might be worth trying to drive a few more locally before committing to buy again. To make an RS4 sound anything like AMG level, it'll need an aftermarket exhaust and probably a non-centre resonated version, as a package they're far more refined and less shouty.

It feels slow compared to the C63 because of the disparity in torque. You need to work the RS4 (above 4500rpm) for it to boogie
