B8 RS4 driver select

Post by Mclelland77 » Wed Oct 18, 2017 8:47 am

Hi there I've had my RS4 for a couple of years now and my only real gripe is the delayed throttle response when in comfort mode. In daily driving I don't wish to be in sport(holds on to gears/revs too long or manual mode but I wish the throttle response could be, my question is can I somehow have everything in comfort (inc gearbox which by default includes engine) but the throttle response of sport? Thank you in advance for any technical tips

I don't think the throttle response is the issue, it is more to do with the required power using higher revs because the torque is quite low with the nature of the engine. In comfort, the gear change is slow and smooth which adds to the delay on change down. I actually find downshifting in sports is smoother due to better rev matching. In comfort it seems to rev the engine then dump the clutch giving a less sympathetic thump in your back?! There might be a map that solves the issue, but in my mind the engine only responds quickly above 3k

Agree with Noddy. If you want better throttle control with all the usual benefits of comfort, you’ll need to use the paddles...

Thank you for your quick response and sorry I should have explained it better it's mainly when joining roundabouts/pulling out of junctions so already in 1st gear. When in sport I depress the accelerator and the car moves off in a reasonable manner and progressively accelerates, however in comfort I depress the accelerator and there's a delay before the car responds and then if I push harder it jolts forward. I suppose the solution I am looking for is to separate the engine and gearbox settings within the driver select, is there a tuner who offers this?

If you put it in Auto it will generally run in Comfort unless you start pressing on in which case it will tighten up automatically. Quite funny when the exhaust note changes - bit like the car saying "go on, give it some beans" ;)
I do remember the hesitation you mention a couple of times after I first got the car in 2013, but I seem to remember there was a software update and I never really noticed it after that.

I tend to use Auto most of the time and use manual override for extra engine braking and the like. Sport's okay for a while, but I find the downshift blip annoying fairly quickly.

As approaching roundabouts/junctions I always pull the shifter back into sports mode making change down quicker, then another nudge back to normal drive when on the move.
Tends to get rid of the slow pull off from comfort mode.

Thanks for the replies, I can't believe I'm moaning about it as I've always used the paddles in previous cars, guess I'm getting old and lazy!
