Brakes, please help ?
I know this has probably been on here before but I'm a newbie, please advise....
My 2014 will be due pads and discs before too much longer, do I stick with original parts or are there better options out there, what makes to I go for and more importantly what makes to I avoid, please help if you can, don't want to make any expensive mistakes ??

Re: Brakes, please help ?
Who has said it needs new discs and pads? Some garages recommend new discs at every second pad change, but this seems like a 'sell up' practice to me. Unless the discs are severely lipped, ridged, or less than the minimum thickness, I would just replace the pads. I would stick with Audi's pads, and they aren't as expensive as you would think.
Re: Brakes, please help ?
I have just been in the same situation. New discs and pads for the front as my discs were badly scored and lipped at 22k. I managed to get a quote from Euro parts for £235 +vat per front disc, but they couldn't supply any pads that I had even heard of. On my hunt for pads in my local independent I happened to mention getting a good quote from Euro parts for the discs and they suggested buying with caution......they said that a lot of the parts they supply are cheap as they come from China and may well not be as good as the genuine Audi parts. At that point I just got fed up going round in circles and bought the genuine front discs and pads all round from TPS for £1080inc vat and a friend of mine will hopefully fit on Sunday for me although he did say the rears might be more complicated due to the electric handbrake and winding the pistols back in When i was looking for the pads online I couldnt find any suppliers that could supply a matched set for front and rear, they were all different makes and generally they were too cheap like £70 instead of about £330 and I do feel that you generally get what you pay for and was concerned about squealing brakes which would drive me round the bend. Also what spurred me on to look for alternative pads was not due to the cost, but it was suggested on another forum by a member that the audi brake pads are held together with rivets which cause the premature scoring of the discs which I seem to have suffered with.....it seemed to make sense, but actually it is wrong information as the genuine pads i bought are brembo and there is not a rivet in site.... moral of the story is don't believe everything you read

Re: Brakes, please help ?
I take it all back, this is a picture of one of my pads clearly showing the rivets that hold it all together. This is very bad as they clearly score the discs, and well before the pad warning light comes on. Audi told me my pads and discs were knackered about 3000 to 4000 miles before my pad warning light came on. I will be checking my pads every 5-10k miles from now on i think and replacing them long before they ruin another set of discs. As these pads are by Brembo, it would be interesting to see if Pagid (if you can get them) will suffer the same problem.

Holy Christ, just had my fronts replaced with genuine OEM at 27k and they were no where near that worn....Your brakes get some abuse if they needed changing at 18-19k, I'm presuming you track it or it has been?

Well I've had it from a main dealer at approx. 4k miles so i doubt they tracked it and i haven't, but it does get the occasional spirited run here and there. Admittedly this picture is of the most worn pad as it showed the rivets the most (there was quite a difference in wear levels between the four pads, but even on the least worn they were showing through.

Re: Brakes, please help ?
I'm just surprised at the wear rate. Mine is driven daily and likewise has a few spirited drives including autobahn's in Germany with stops from 150+. The pads when changed were like chalk and cheese to yours.

Re: Brakes, please help ?
Was there any wear material left? Looking to get mine changed, but will wait until a couple of mm left min. Did they squeal when they got low?

Re: Brakes, please help ?
The pad wear was uneven across the 4 pads. The worst one is in the picture above and there was still pad left on it. It looks worse than it is in the picture really. The others were not as bad and the inner pads had the least wear on them. There was no brake squeal at all and they worked fine right up to when they were removed.
If you are waiting till the last minute to change them, keep a very close eye on your discs for scoring, as the rivets will come through long before the brake warning light comes on from my experience and you are then in for a much higher repair bill.
