Ceramics - how much do they cost?
Ceramics - how much do they cost?
Gents,
how much does it actually cost to retro-fit the ceramics on the RS4?
Forget the secondhand option as they come up rarely, I'm talking from from someone like MRC or dare I say Audi??
is it a stupid figure, by that I mean something north of £8k ....
cheers

Yes, they're a stupid figure.
I got a quote for the B7 which uses Ceramics of the same size. It was £8.5k inc Vat but excluding labour and that was a few years ago now.

Re: Ceramics - how much do they cost?
This is why I don't understand how not so many people added the ramics when speccing the B8.
From memory they were 4k, yep 4k, thats cheap at that price,
plus I got 10 percent of all added extras which made them only £3,600,
bargain in my eyes, but I suppose also lucky enough to have been able to buy new.

Because whilst subsidised when buying new, you then have replacement costs of what remains a consumable item.Outtlaw wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2017 2:08 pmThis is why I don't understand how not so many people added the ramics when speccing the B8.

I also wonder whether they're really worth it on a road car.
Re: Ceramics - how much do they cost?
I thought they would be a silly price
I had to sit the last session out at Donington as my brakes had cooked, my fault because I didn't get chance to change the fluid before I went. Need to order some SRF and some new pads.
If the ceramics had been say £5k or £6k I would have been tempted, but getting close to £10k gets me a nice 'toy' car to play with for the summer .....
I agree if buying new I would have defiantly have put them on the spec sheet, especially when you consider the issues everyone had with the old B7 set-up

Yeah, it's no brainer when spec'ing new.

Re: Ceramics - how much do they cost?
Having had ceramics on my B7, when I changed to my B8 two years ago, one of the 'must haves' was ceramics. I only saw 2 with ceramics; one was a crap colour, and then I found mine, in the colour I wanted, and it was a low mileage highly spec'd dealer 'demo' used by the dealer principle (usually a sales pitch, but it was actually confirmed in the paired phones in the car, and also in a print out of a warranty claim that came with the car). I bought it at 90 days old, and it was priced at over 16k below its new list price (with all the options), and also was priced similarly to much lesser spec'd and higher mileage cars advertised at the time. Plus mine was one of the last with ceramics, as the option for them was deleted from the spec list in late 2014, and the chance of finding another one was probably quite remote.murph7355 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2017 2:13 pmBecause whilst subsidised when buying new, you then have replacement costs of what remains a consumable item.Outtlaw wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2017 2:08 pmThis is why I don't understand how not so many people added the ramics when speccing the B8.

Although I don't track the car, the chance of ceramics, on a highly spec'd car at a big reduction of the price if I had bought new, was too good to pass on! I would have ceramics any day over steels (sorry, not intentionally starting the ceramics v steels debate again....)

Re: Ceramics - how much do they cost?
I've got Ceramics on my current B8, and the dealer quoted me £6,400 for replacement discs alone
Realistically, if you're looking to upgrade from Standard discs, by the time you've factored in pads, calipers, carriers and whatever recalibration's needed, you're going to be looking at comfortably over £8k
You can offset some of the cost with the sale of your existing set up, but I suspect you're looking around a grand return for that, possibly ?

Re: Ceramics - how much do they cost?
I had ceramics on my car, I didn't buy it new and I think apart from the weight saving, unless your going to track the car they are a waste of time for Rd driving, if you buy second hand and the car has them all good. But once they are getting to wear limit there is no way I'd be wanting to splash out to replace them. But they do look good

Some decent fluid and pads will make a lot of differenceV8mark wrote:I thought they would be a silly price![]()

out of interest though what kind of mileage was your car on when they needed replacing?

Yeah, still lurking on here a bit. Just waiting for the next RS4 to come out before trading mine in.
They didn't get replaced in the end, but they started to squeal a bit, so the dealer looked at causes and replacing the discs was an option, hence why I know the price
New pads sorted it though in the end
My car's on 47k miles now

New RS5 hasn't had a particularly warm welcome. Topgear have reviewed. Don't bother with the RS product, buy the S5 seems the best bet.
