Help with DRC please

Post by DeanoC » Thu Feb 16, 2017 9:14 am

Can anyone help me with some B8.5 DRC info?

I have a weep on the front nearside. I read a lot about a 3rd generation shock being available. Does anyone have any part numbers or Audi technial service bulletin numbers i can go in armed with?

I had the updated part fitted to mine by Jack Barclay in Wandsworth. Perhaps worth giving them a call to ask?
Current:
- Audi B8 RS4 - Panther Black
- VW High Up! TSI - Red with Black Roof
Previous:
- BMW R56 Mini JCW - Black with Red Roof
- Peugeot 306 1.6 GLX - British Racing Green
- Ford Fiesta 1.1 Popular Plus - Sky Blue

My 14 plate B8 is in Audi currently - as a result of me mentioning that the front suspension was quite noisy, the front suspension has been completely replaced.

The paperwork refers to this as 'Carried out Warranty repair:- Supplied and fitted Front shock absorbers x 2 to rectify creaking noise. Charged system'

I went to pick up the car yesterday, but as soon as I started up, I got a 'Suspension failure' warning come up, so left it at the dealer. They called me later in the day to confirm that one of my rear shocks has failed so this is being replaced too. Should get the car back tomorrow.

I am happy with the service apart from burning 1/4 a tank of fuel 'testing' the new set up, but failing to get the warning before I picked up the car...

There is plenty of info on here regarding DRC issues, but the magic word to trigger the replacement front shocks is 'knocking'. As long as the 'knock' is confirmed by the technician then they should be replaced with the uprated shocks under warranty irrespective of how old the car is.
The uprated front shocks are the following part numbers -
8K0 412 019 A
8K0 412 020 A
They are the same part number as the originals but are suffixed by the letter 'A'.
However, you mention weeping which is a different fault. I understand that 'misting'' is considered acceptable by Audi, but if it is 'wet' then they should be replaced without question.

Make sure they are knocking then - I'm sure both my fronts are, so it will soon be getting booked in.

When the suspension knocks, how loud and noticeable is it?

Not like bottoming it out on a pothole. More like something banging in the glovebox over a speedbump

When mine was doing it, I would describe it as a definate hollow knock - metallic clunk maybe, but only on minor road surface imperfections like a sunken manhole cover or sunken repair to the tarmac. Driving into a pothole is more like a thump than a knock which is what you would expect from any car. Most cars seem to have the noise more apparant from the front offside, and moreso when cold and in comfort mode.
It should be quite an obvious when you hear the knock - shortly after getting the car, even my wife, who doesn't know the front end from the back end of a car said, "Whats that noise?", so it should be quite obvious to us chaps!!!
Mine have been replaced with the uprated shocks and the knock has gone.

Car collected just now - noted that the tech used £40 of fuel burnt 'road testing'.

Although under warranty I was interested to note that the NSR shock was charged at £439.79 + VAT - thankfully Audi picking this up under warranty.

Handling is definitely sharper if a little firmer. Just pleased to have my car back with no faults...

Is this something that's a recall? I hear all of warranty replacements but sounds to me if that many go wrong on such low milliage etc.
Mine just hit 38k. I have 6 months warranty left. Feel I should say it has this noise even if it doesn't to get them replaced at this rate of hearing about it.
May have to look at extending warranty anyway but jeez.

Further more. It's my thinking that a shock is a moving wearable item. So them covering it under warranty for a "wearable" part as such says to me that it's a design fault?
So surely they should replace them what ever warranty or bought 2nd hand and not from audk anyway?
Being as there is a 3rd gen now too?
3rd time bloody lucky is it?? Lol
