What software do people use for parts lookups and maintenanc

I'd like to look up basic tasks to save trips to the dealers - things like removing interior panels to locate rattles etc.

Also what's the best way of finding and checking the compatability of parts? As an example I'm after new front discs which are 8T0615301 but i found some that seem exactly the same but are marked 8U0615301.
