Why do some cars have 'RS' and others 'RS 4' on the dials?

A weird one that i can't figure out. It doesn't seem to be age or LHD/RHD related.

It's bugging me now. Just looked on ebay and found 2012's with both types, 2013 with only RS, 2014 with both and 2015 with only RS

I assume you mean the rev counter. If so I can't say I've ever seen any with "RS 4" on the dial, only "RS".
"RS 4" always appears in the middle computer though.

It's a weight saving tactic, so obviously, the cars without the 4 are faster due to around 0.5g saving
Both my b8's have the 4

I'd have said that it's more of a MY14 update as I can find '12,'62 & '13 reg cars with RS4 on the dial face. Later cars ('63, '14, '64, '15) all then appear to have RS which ties in with when the other model year changes started to appear. Obviously not all updates came to the production line at the same time, so there will be some exceptions.

Early models had the RS4 just printed on to the dial:
Later models have a 3d chrome badge which just has the RS:

Early models have it printed, later models its a badge to give a premium feel. The thing is the dials are also in the C7 RS6, have you spotted the RS6 lights around the dials of the RS4 too on the later mdels, they ar elike litle triangles? This means one clock set designed and manufactured and saves costs in the long run.

Those triangles light up on mine to corelate with where the speed has been set for the adaptive cruise control. Might also be the same for normal cruise control?
