B9 delays - what might you do?

Post by kmpowell » Sun Feb 28, 2016 3:00 pm

So with the B9 RS4 looking like it's going to be severely delayed, it seems like there's going to be at least three (from what I've read on here, Graeme, myself and Ross) of us that will be in limbo and possibly having to consider other makes/models one our finance comes to an end.

With that in mind I'm curious to know what you're thinking if you're in the same position?

Me, with the C7 currently showing bank account crippling residuals, I've been thinking about 'down-pricing'.. With that in mind yesterday I test drove a Golf R estate, and I'll be honest it was a big unexpected shock. It felt faster than the RS4, and the biggest shock is the boot is bigger!

Noise wise, it's never going to be anywhere near the B8, but the four pot does have a cheeky burble, and on full acceleration the growl was good. The DSG seems to compliment the 2.0 lump quite well. The only downside is the 6+ month waiting times being quoted (due to the estate being built in a different factory in batches), and the interior of the VW isnt as inspiring or as plush as the other premium brands such as BMW.

The test drive certainly gave me food for thought, especially with the 15-20% discounts currently being offered.

I had the s3 sport back before the rs, well between the rs's, it's the same as the r, good car, quick off the mark but not as much urgency as the speed builds...

To me, it really depends what your requirements are, if it's an estate and 4wd, then it's extremely limited. Other things to look at for me will be:

Cayenne
Panamera
Sq5/7 should one arrive
RR sport
Or keep the rs4!

I think there's going to be a shift soon towards the plug in hybrid type...so will be interesting to see which manufacturer goes first...

my experience in a golf gte is that the power delivery is good, but the car is set up for comfort, so not as usable as you'd like...far too light and loose.

I'll be sitting on the fence for a while yet, possibly miss a generation and get updated then. Mostly as I love the B8!

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do :(

The rs3 saloon is a contender for some for sure - will be 400hp and still sounding lovely. Downside is its... well... a saloon.

It's half the price of the rs6 too.

I was looking at caymans too as some of you know. The bloody order book is closed on those too now so... I'm still no better off!

I can recommend the RS3 if it is not too small for you. Sounds amazing and as a road car it is goes really well.

Or keep the B8 until the B9 arrives.

Like Glenn, the RS4 is still doing it for me at the moment, although I am very conscious it's getting long in the tooth now at around 17months and 31k miles. It still brings a smile to my face though.
I've driven most of the competition recently, and nothing really floats my boat. The best of the estate cars is the new C63S, which although a really great drive as an estate car, still just looks like any other rep mobile C180 is bigger wheels. Plus, it's a merc, and I'm not sure I've reached an age where I want an old granddads mobile :)
The only real contender, and a car that hugely impressed me, was the Macan Turbo. However, lead times are not far off 18months, but they do get cancelled orders.
I love the C7 RS6, but I think it's just too big for me, My life largely consists of lugging my bike around mountain bike centres, taking my kids to their various football games and gong to Sainsburys to do shopping. All places where people aren't known for great parking, and having a car that's just that little bit too big could result in a constant headache.
RS6 does have a tow bar opion though, which would save having to keep hiring a van when I take my motorbike to the track.
RS3 is a downgrade, and I'm not that keen on the current one having tested one. The Golf R is a decent car, but it's still a golf and doesn't carry any of the prestige of an RS car. Plus, nearly every one I see is driven by a knob
I think ultimately, I'll hang on for a few more months and see if we get any idea on when the next RS4 is coming, and decide from there.

I have to make a similar decision but its not down to leasing just personal preference. I am a year in to 2yr ownership of my RS4, at 18mths I have to decide my car for the the next 2yr period.

The new B9 RS4 won't be available to order by then, if it is I wont be able to drive it. so I have 3 choices:

RS3 - too small for me but a worthy consideration
RS6 PE - This is my preferred choice and will probably be the way I go ultimately
Non-Audi - This is always an option, an M4 or M5 but I do like having an estate but I don;t actually need it so not a deal breaker.

I have to say I feel very fortunate to have this questions to answer, thanks to the wife.

Yep, brutal and sad to see the old C5+s now worth 10k or so
These are great cars, but a great asset they are not!
5 years v10s maybe be worth more tbh!

Yep crazy prices on second hand market now. :(

Mostly Audis fault too with such huge discounts when new driving 2nd hand price down.

Bumping this thread since I'm almost at 3 years and looking into replacements - might keep mine but fancy a change. No idea what to get - Tried an RS3 - was nice BUT it would piss me off the news of a FL being imminent

C7 is too big, we have an SQ5 in the house so that ticks the boxes for dog hauling duties :bigblink:
