Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
Hi all -
New to the forum, just picked up a 2014 RS4 B4, Sepang Blue, 4.5k on the clock. Very happy indeed!
It has the Sports Exhaust, and I have my Drive Select Individual settings to have the Engine Sound on Dynamic all the time. However, I've noticed when I start the car, that setting doesn't get activated by default. Sitting in a quiet area, I can hear the exhaust flaps open/close, so if I get in and start the car, the flaps remain closed. If I switch from D to S and back to D, I can hear the flaps open and the noise change between the two. If I go into the MMI system and enter the Individual Settings page, the exhaust immediately changes and stays that way until I switch off the car -- that's just be entering that "set up individual" page, not actually changing anything (I can see Dynamic for Engine Sound is already selected). Likewise, if I start the car, the flaps are shut, and I cycle through all of the Drive Select options by pushing the button on the dash, to get back to Individual, the exhaust flaps open and stay open.
So, even though Individual is selected when I get into the car and start it, it doesn't actually activate unless I enter that screen on the MMI or re-select Individual.
Is this a known issue? It's annoying to have to press the Drive Select 5 times to cycle through them all to get the settings I want every time I start the car!
Thanks,
- Michael

Re: Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
Hi mate, congrats on the car and welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately this is standard behaviour, there's quite a few topics in the forum where this is discussed in detail (including putting clothes pegs on the exhaust open valve tubes to keep them permanently open!)
The other thing you can do rather than going through the drive select button sequence is just to slip the stick into Sport which opens the valves, then you can shift back again, with the valves remaining open.
Enjoy the motor!

Re: Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
Thanks for the help. I do like to have the open/closed option, so I can choose as and when I want to annoy the neighbours, though early starts on cold mornings won't make me popular regardless...
Here's a photo I took at the dealer when I picked it up:

Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
Have you not got an option in settings for "Exhaust"? You need this to be set in Dynamic but even so it will only be noisy in "S" and quiet in "D". Engine in Dynamic means you'll have quick shifts but not necessarily loud exhaust.
Re: Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
If you leave the car in individual mode all you have to do is select S on the gears then go back to D to open the valves.
In my opinion Audi have it right this way. I went down the route of pulling the vacuum pipe off the exhaust valve and sticking a bolt in it to lock the exhaust in sport mode, but to be honest it was embarrassing to have the exhaust so loud on start up, especially when the engine is cold.

Re: Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
I've found that the only way to get the exhaust to stay in dynamic mode is to change the Drive Select setting -- either by entering the "Set Individual" page, or by switching between settings (push 5 times to cycle through the options and back to Individual again). If I just start the car, then switch from D to S and back to D on the gearshift, I can hear the exhaust note changing from normal, to louder, and back to normal again.
Incidentally, the Individual mode on my SQ5 doesn't have this issue. I have the exhaust set to "dynamic" on the individual setting in that car, and there's no issue; the exhaust sound actuators are on all the time, no fiddling required.

Agree, you cannot go D:S:D and keep them open you need to re-select Individual - Its no biggie.

Re: Drive Select Individual not activating automatically?
I have engine noise in dynamic ( individual set up ) all the time and it stays like it.
If I put it into S it gets louder but only remains that way if it stays in S. Putting it back into D and its 'quiet' again.
Am I missing something or is somebody else?
