B8 sound when just started.

Hi Guy,

So I'm loving my B8 Noggy but wanted to see if anyone has noticed how even more awesome it sounds when cold and it's started up? It last about 1min but then something changes over and it goes quiet. I've fixed the exhaust so it's open all the time, but for me even with the sports exhaust it doesn't sound V8 enough, well from inside or with the window down, maybe it does to other people when I drive by or have it on full throttle :-), dam u audi for making the car to sound proofed lol.

Let me know what you guys think.

Hi John - they're great aren;t they?

So my experience is that the car starts with very high feeling as it's a bit a of a race engine; high fuel or choke keeps the temps down whilst it sorts itself out. mine does the same.

I have to say though - 7000 miles in and mine sounds like a beast; maybe i've blown out the cats or something; but it sounds fabulous. almost enough to put me off having an aftermarket.

You need to enjoy them; conduct "sporty driving" and see what you get RIV was absolutely right on the best settings for individual; everything on dynamic and the suspension on auto.

intersting to hear that's what you think is best too boff.
I only ever use comfort if the rds are very poor when not pushing on.

I'm not keen on the slack feeling the car has on comfort mode tbh.
Guess it's all down to personal choice

Cheers Riv, mine on 2800miles so maybe it need some more running in, I'll see how it goes over the next few 1000'end....I'm using dynamic on everything but steering and suspension, I can't decided on the steering and dynamic sus on the roads around here is hair to hard.

I think the noise you are referring to is the secondary air pump (?) which activates on a cold start up to force more air into the exhaust (manifolds) to improve cold start emissions and to get the cats up to efficient working temperature more quickly. When the secondary air pump stops after about 30 seconds or do, the engine seems to quieten down significantly.
Someone with more mechanical knowledge than me will no doubt add to this, but that is my basic understanding of it!

Info from another forum:

"It is the secondary airpump. It's a fan that is located against the firewall at the rear of the right engine bank. It blows air into the exhaust system on startup and at idle when the engine is cold. The fan is fairly expensive to replace and the bearings only last so long. There is a posting on the A6 board where someone took it apart and replaced the bearings but it sounded like the fix was short lived. It only impacts the pollution control system and will not cause a problem with the engines normal function. You may get a check engine light if the air flow drops very low or the fan quits all together but again it won't stop the car. They can run for a long time making noise and still operate."

With regards to Audi Drive Select I run mine in individual mode and I choose:
Engine/Gearbox - Comfort
Suspension control - Comfort
Dynamic Steering - Auto
Sport differential - Dynamic
Engine sound - Dynamic

Note that the exhaust flap system has 3 settings, comfort, sport & dynamic. The sport settings only works when in comfort or auto mode and you pull back on the shifter and get S in the display.

When I want to take the car for a hard drive or round the track I select full Dynamic mode and move shifter to the left and use the paddles.

Secondary air injection.

Where do I get like a guide on what I've bought - you know the cool Engineering and Tech I've paid for?
