Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Gutted and looking for some advise on this...
Dropped my partner off this morning and as she was about to get out the passenger side 2.5 ft branch fell from great height out of the tree above where I was parked and smashed my windscreen on passenger side. Fortunately it didn't hit her as would have been a serious injury or worse.
I've been wrangling with eSure and Autoglass all day about trying to find a quick replacement as I need my motor for business travel. Autoglass said they can order Audi OEM screen (preferred option) subject to approval from eSure underwriting (waiting to hear on this) but it might take 2-3 weeks to get hold of. Said the same for Autoglass branded screen which I would really rather not bother with.... endless to say this is a serious inconvenience.
I've therefore spoken to one of my local Audi dealers and they say there are 9 screens available for them to order against from Audi UK and if ordered today they could have in stock by Wednesday so have pointed Autoglass in their direction to try and speed things up.
The other main issue I'm taking exception to is that Autoglass are telling me they won't be able to re-calibrate the Lane Assist Camera in my windscreen and my Audi dealer need to do that - quoted cost is circa £400 from dealer which eSure are saying I'm not covered for and are refusing to pay for.
Has anyone else encountered this insurance issue with the need for Lane Assist Camera re-calibration when having a windscreen replaced? Do they absolutely need re-calibrating or might it work ok without?
Cheers

Gutter buddy - but Tin we can fix; bodies not.
So onto fixing this - looks like autoglass are giving you the right run around; with my insurance I can pay for a slightly higher excess to get it fixed where I want. Suggest you just move the whole claim to Audi Direct.
Also - isn't not re-calibrating the sensor not very much like not putting the rain sensor back on? or gluing on the rear view mirror?

You are quite right about tin being able to be fixed and thats what we both said.boff wrote:Gutter buddy - but Tin we can fix; bodies not.

I think I'm going to end up paying a slightly higher excess to get fixed where I want but not sure yet. You would think its the same as gluing rain sensor back on but is actually a camera that monitors the white lines... hence why I'm being told may need recalibrating. If I get it repaired at Audi I'm going to ask them not to re-calibrate and see how I get on with it with the view I'll get re-calibrated if need be. I use the lane assist when in 50mph roadworks with the active cruise - seem to both work quite well together and if I have it fitted I want to be able to use it.

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Had mine replaced a while back, I insisted on a genuine Audi screen, all replaced with no problems or recalibration
Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Mine is in today for a new screen and I have both active cruise and lane assist and I too was told this work was not covered by insurance
Audi fighted my corner for me and got it covered under window claim. Over £1k I think it is

Good to know... Thanks. May I ask who your insurer is?

I haven't got lane assist but I've got a camera also in my screen but I thought that's for the matrix headlights. That's how it reads in the manual. ??? Mines a C7 though.

Can't comment onarrix headlight camera location but you can clearly see from the image here where the camera is located - conforms with the camera on top of my windscreen. https://www.audi.co.uk/glossary/a/audi-lane-assist.html

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Nah the camera in the window-screen reads the white lines; the black obelisk in the front bumper is the radar for the cruise.
So yep - lane assist which is probably on most of our cars; should be insured for refit - funny isn't it.... once upon a time the most complex sierra cosworth type window had a heated element in it - now we've got cameras; light sensors; rain sensors....!!

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
If it helps, a friend with a C7 (non RS) has the lane assist on his, and was faced with a similar problem
In the end, he just got it fitted without the calibration, and it all worked fine
Upon further investigation through Audi, they said that the 'calibration' is basically putting the mirror unit on the screen to position it just right (the screen, I believe, has the position marked anyway) and then resetting the system
He had his done around 12months ago without calibration, and it still works exactly as it did previously - He's a big motorway mile muncher too, and says he uses the system a lot, so would be quite sensitive to it not working as it should

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Thanks for comments.. this is my intended course of action. A case of suck it and see, however, this is what I suspect will happen... warning lights most likely.Graeme4130 wrote:If it helps, a friend with a C7 (non RS) has the lane assist on his, and was faced with a similar problem

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Quick update as Audi dealer replaced smashed screen yesterday.
I was quite specific about them not carrying out any Lane Assist recalibration work upfront. I'm glad they didn't as LKA works perfectly without the camera recalibration work and can confirm no warning lights of any kind (although I'd be plssed off if there were!
New screen, car valeted, £400 saved... Happy days!

Re: Smashed windscreen - Lane Assist Re-Callibration
Audi would love to make money from something that doesn't need recalibration, I remember someone on this forum insiting every thing needs redoing after a wheel alignment, it doesn't!!I was quite specific about them not carrying out any Lane Assist recalibration work upfront. Can you imagine every time you need you're tracking done having to have Audi re do all the settings?
