Start/Stop button - replacement / upgrade guide

Well that didn't take long. Car's only 500 miles old and I want to modify it already! I wanted the start stop button with the red ring round it... :drink:

Anyway - simple guide to replace the start/stop button for keyless cars.

Dead easy, took 5 minutes.

Items required:
Plastic trim removal tools.
start/stop switch part number: 8K0905217C (8K0905217A is the standard all alloy switch).

How to:
Unlock car, but leave keys outside of car so repeatedly pressing the start/stop button doesn't drive the car mad... ;)
Using plastic trim removal tools, remove the leather shift gaiter. Then reach in and gently prise up the plastic surround with your fingers - it'll pull out with gentle encouragement, it's only clipped in gently. No force is required.

In the photo above I've already removed the cable from the switch and removed the switch itself. However...

You need to remove the switch wiring connector from the switch after you've lifted the trim up (with the switch still pushed home as normal). Once the wiring connector is removed, you can just use your fingers to push the switch from the underside and it'll pop out easily.

As the old haynes says, refitting is a reversal of removal. Push new switch in all the way down, plug in connector, reseat trim, then reseat gaiter. Bask in the new switch glory.

Enjoy.

No it's just painted like.

Honestly it's so simple a child could do it - so dont rush to decide now, you can do it yourself at home :)

Strange that yours was all alloy. My B8.5 S4 has that red button as standard.

That is odd. I wonder if it's a function of whatever options are specified. Obviously advanced key but... something else (interior spec or something.

Mine has pano roof, phone prep high, technology pack high, comfort pack elec seats with memory and folding mirrors.

Not sure if any of those make a difference.

much better with the Red switch, I don't get why they don't put them in standard on the RS models that have that type.
