anyone else with interior rattles?

Hi All,
My Rs4 is fifteen months old now. It's spent 8 weeks this year in the dealership with rattles, and has just come out after 4 weeks. Depressingly only one out the three were cured on this visit, and one of them from the drivers door has not been cured despite being present during all five visits now!

Does anyone else have these issues, because frankly it's driving me insane-especially the clunk coming from the drivers seat!

The dealership are being inside and helpful, but I'm really beginning to think that if they can't cure it in 8 weeks, can it even be cured?

Anyone else with any experience of interior rattles?

I have a couple of intermittent rattles but I live with them as can't be arsed to have the dealers looking after my car for me when I could be driving it.

I put it in S and let the exhaust notes drown out anything worrying

Problem with rattles is pin pointing them,
once you have found where the rattles are coming from, the next problem is the Audi tech has to take apart the trim and replace it all!

For me, I except with performance cars that there are going to be a certain amount of rattles due to the hard suspension and low profile tyres,
and would rather have that than have the trim removed and replaced half a dozen times.

But, if they are major rattles, such as the seat as you have said, then yes i'd be getting them to try and sort it out, that one can't be to hard to do.

My first B8 had an incredibly annoying rattle coming from what I thought was the door, but actually turned out to be pano roof seals.
Apparently cars have odd acoustics and higher pitched squeaks and rattles can sound like they're coming from one place, when they're actually somewhere else
Audi Swindon were pants in fixing it though, and it got done through bath in the end IIRC
Cars shouldn't rattle though, it's a mass produced audi, not a Ferrari or lotus

Silicone spray normally sorts most little noises out

The A4 I had rattled like a tin can for the most part, which was disappointing for a £46K car. Some of the same rattles also feature on the RS4 although it isn't as bad.

The main rattle comes from the dash facia. The dealer replaced this part but it still creaks as much if not more than the original part. Every RS4 besides mine has been the same in that respect. The other problem area was the doors juddering over bumps. The A4 was really bad for this, to the point where the car sounded like it was going to shake itself to bits. Silicone spray sorted the doors for a period of time on the RS4 but tthey are starting to go again over bumps. The dealer sorted out a lot of the trim rattles on the A4 but the car just didn't feel particularly solid so I got rid in favour of the RS.

A new one for the RS4 is the passenger seat vibrates quite a bit at most speeds. You can see it vibrating - put your hand on it and it obviously stops but moving the seat doesn't really change the amount of vibration.

Audi have a good reputation in the press for having well built cars but I think they may have sacrificed quality in recent years as most of the Audi's I've either owned or driven as loaners have been quite poor on build quality...

Funny you mention the seat.....

I've got three remaining rattles.
1) the seat clunks going over bumps-it sounds like plastic on metal, or similar to the noise the electric switches for seat position make when they are first touched. It seems to occur on cornering and when the seats unweightd.

2) the mmi surround has been replaced and rattles more than before-a small rattle has turned into a significant one.

3) the drivers door rattles-the airbag has been changed and the glass surround has been replaced, but the rattle remains. I think it may be minimised by pressing onto the leather armrest on the door, but I'm not convinced enough of that to report back.

I'm going to take it out at the weekend for an extended session to see if I can localise the rattles more.

I tell you what though, it's really ruining the ownership experience. Not sure where to go if they can't fix these rattles, but I can't live with them indefinitely.

Years ago on my B6 I had a really annoying seat rattle - after much prodding, poking and tearing-out of hair it turned out to be caused by a £1 coin that had rolled out of my pocket and become wedged inside the seat hinge.

This stuff is good for getting rid of creaks and rattles - many of which may actually be coming from the door and window seals. I know this is what BMW Service use (possibly Audi too) and I bought a couple of bottles of it. Also stops seals drying out and creaking.

If the noise if coming from the passenger seat you can either stick it in the boot it or leave it at home, it's most probably the wife
