What car to sit alongside your RS4?

Post by Miami42 » Mon May 18, 2015 1:44 pm

Having a slight dilemma as to what to purchase to sit alongside my RS4?

With the family wagon sorted I think ideally a sports car, something with a different driving experience, probably faster or just as quick (potentially 2+2 for the kids) which leads to a 911?...Anyone been through this process/advice on what's the perfect partner?

I'd have the 911 instead of the RS4 and buy a SUV/load lugger. Cooking 911 is not that far away performance wise, though a different dynamic proposition. You'd have to go TTS to see a major step change. GTS is a happy medium.

The whole point of the RS cars is that they offer the crossover/compromise/cake-and-eat-it.

Depends on budget, I guess, V10 R8?

@doddlebug: agreed, a GT3 would be a good option although currently sold out and £50k above list at present. New R8 looks good, will have to see what its like in the flesh. Standard Carrera 2 performance wise i can't see being that far away from the RS. So i suppose a different driving experience is the thing to look at? over all out speed.

@Gusto: RS4 is the family wagon that the Mrs drives and loves, so really its a car for weekend use for me.

I wrote a long winded thing about not having an R8 alongside an RS4/RS6 as they were too similar/familiar and justified it really well to myself and got logged off when I went to post. Gist was I sold mine to make room for a growing family and went to RS4s form then.

Anyway, for me, Pork GTS seems a good shout, Cayman GT4 too worth a look? Left field F-Type (V8 obvs)?

Money no object I would have an LP 560-4 to sit alongside the RS4 for pure fun.

V10 R8 is a big step up performance wise over an Rs4. Less so the V8
LP Lambo's are certainly lovely for drama, but they feel very old inside and that gearbox is dreadful
I had my heart set on a Lambo for years, and then drove one, which left me really quite disappointed. Stronic V10 R8 is a much nicer car to drive and performance difference is negligible in most circumstances... It's still not a lambo for occasion though and driving a Gallardo would be special every time

I think 911 is probably as good as you'll get for experience and practicality (2+2) vs. the rest.

Leftfield but what about a Caterham/Atom? Totally different experience to RS4 and 911. Fair-weather driving only but a hoot on track too.

I'd have an Elise (and used to years ago as 2nd car) but that lacks the performance criteria I guess.

@carsarecool, agreed the 911 is probably the best practically, I did look at track cars but i really need something i can park on a drive in central London and not worry about it too much. Maybe a GTS is the best of both worlds or a 997 GT3. Cayman GT4 is a good shout but they are going for silly money at the moment, they will hold their value probably better than most other things though and experience wise different to the RS.

@Graeme, Lambo would be interesting for sure so maybe worth a look, thanks.

Regarding 911's, then unless you're going to a turbo/Turbo S or a GT3, then it won't feel much of a performance step over an RS4 everyday car
991 Series 911's are fast, but they're also quite refined, even in GTS form.
For me, a weekend car on top of an Rs4 should be something you can scare yourself in, plus something that is an occasion to drive

GT4's are not yet delivering in the uk and demand was way higher than supply (I know only too well, as put a deposit down to have it given back having missed the allocation), but when they hit the market, they'll be >£80k for the early cars, even with a base spec of £64. GT3 prices are starting to come down again after the somewhat extraordinary balloon, but you're still looking at £140k for a 1000mile car
The new R8 is quite pricey, so I can't see it eating into existing V10 R8 prices for a while, and they're pretty stable starting around 80k for an Stronic facelift car, which would tick your boxes and give you a much easier ride in terms of depreciation than say a 991 GTS, which will lose quite a big chunk.
I appreciate this thread isn't all about resale value, but it's nice to know that whilst your RS4 is going through the floor in value, your weekend toy isn't costing your pocket much more than fuel, insurance, tyres and servicing

Yep i think scaring yourself is a good place to start, GT3's would be the best bet but i didn't have my deposit in on time and a similar situation to you on the GT4 where it was promptly returned. The new R8 seems expensive and i'm not 100% on the styling yet until i see it in the showroom.
Turbo could be an option although something rarer would also tick another box, there seem be a loads of 991's kicking about town. GT4 might answer this?

Worth looking at the out going R8 that's a good shout.

The other option is to go old school and a Porsche 356 (garage needed) or 912 and not worry about the performance to much just enjoy the drive.

I've a mate who has an old, late 60's 912. It's a lovely thing to look at, but it's blimmin slow and dim witted to drive, plus the steering wheel's about the size of a bus. He loves it, but soon realised it's for polishing and shows only as spirited drives become a thing of frustration and he was constantly getting overtaken by Golf GTI's and other well sorted hot hatches :(

I agree in part on the styling of the new R8 and Im yet to see one in the flesh, but Audi have a way of doing things right, and I think (hope) it'll be nice in the metal.
I've an 'expression of interest' in for one, which basically means you put a very small deposit down and get first dibs on orders when the book opens later next month.
Saying that, it'll take me 8-9months to free up the cash, so I won't get in early and really want to see and drive one before I throw a whole heap of cash into one as for me, that's a lot of money and a decision I want to make having driven one properly.
GT4 would've ticked all the boxes for me, but I was something like number 13 in the dealer and their allocation was as little as 4 once the 918 customers took first dibs on everything, so they held my £5k for a few months before I had to ask for it back. Didn't stop them phoning me most weeks with various offers on 991 GTS cars that were physical stock, but I guess that's how they do their trade - Get interest and then try and ply you off with something else that's no doubt more profitable
I did consider a 911 second car a few times, but my next door neighbour has a C4S Cab that he drives in leather backed gloves, and fitting in with his image in our close put me off ;)
Like I mentioned above, a Gallardo is an incredible occasion on every drive and it would get loads of positive attention, but driving one back to back with a Stronic V10 R8 makes you realise just how old hat the Gallardo is and truly terrible that Rtronic gearbox is in the lambo.
Plus, whilst we're on neighbours, there's a guy a few doors down from me with a new Huracan. That looks and sounds amazing, but would be way out of my budget

I like the idea of the f-type r coupe. But... I hear it's not a Porsche turbo, but very good non the less.

Depreciation... Assuming pretty tragic!

Or the r8 v10 as mentioned!

Both! Long term test drives... That'd confuse the neighbours.

I mulled over this for a long time and eventually went for the 911 Turbo. For me performance and the 2+2 ticked all the boxes.
Yes I've the RS4 for going anywhere with the family, but should you need to pick up the kids from somewhere you can't get 2 in an R8.
