B9 RS4 ‘expected’ 0-62mph performance?

Post by s4tokyo » Sun Jan 25, 2015 8:25 am

I understand the RS4 is not ‘just’ about the numbers, but given that the RS3 is reported to have the above particular spec performance of 4.3sec, it stands to reason(?) that next RS4 model will need to show significant pace improvement from current 4.7sec.
Though that is to be expected, playing here with numbers - and allowing space for the RS5 spec below the 6 - suppose that 4.0/ 4.1 wouldn’t be an improbable target.
Alternatively, anyone see reason why it would be set slower than RS3? That would really go against the the thread :boots:

Do people really buy this sort of car based on its specific 0-60 time though?

A few tenths here and few tenths there in the real world can be wiped out by weather conditions or driver ability. When I was looking at RS4s originally I didn't even look at the 0-60, in fact I can honestly say I don't know the specific time (I could probably say roughly) now even though I own one.

Outside the world of Top Gear and VMAX willy waving, I'm not sure it really matters to the people who actually hand over their hard earned for these cars?

:)

0-60 times are for the pub/favoured by people who know little about cars. My previous car was way quicker to 60 than my current car but both are quite different propositions and experiences. So IMO 0-60 times are irrelevant in real driving terms.

I would guess the B9 RS4, if there is to be one, would be quicker than the B8 as I would wager it'll be "blown".

As noted in original post, I understand it’s not just about numbers i.,e. speed to 62 in this case. Like selves, and most owners I assume, I didn’t buy RS4 for fastest acceleration but the ‘overall’ package. However from the Product Planning / Marketing side of things it does intrigue how these specs are established....and in that sense I was querying what the B9 RS4 acceleration performance might be. [Text is a horrible communication tool at times;-) ]

Certain Customers may not appreciate paying for a RS5 that is out spec’d by a RS4, a RS4 that is out spec’d by a RS3 - in certain parameters - and so on (or across Brands for that matter). Above all, the Motoring Press and certain Competitor Brands regularly make hay over such numbers.

Idle chat it is, but would nonetheless treasure to be fly on the wall at meeting(s) where such specs are decided at Product Planning stages:-)

I'd imagine they'll be looking to compete in the market with BMW M4 and the new C63, so 0-60 low 4's is par for the course
Engine will very likely be the new VAG family 3.0TT, but then again, they're sticking with N/A for R8 (apparently), so you never know
As much as they like to stick with a pattern, they also like the occasional curve ball (think RSQ3), so who knows......
