Post by skiman » Thu Nov 27, 2014 10:55 am

3 months old.
3000 miles

Not through fault of the driver. Front right suspension makes a bad knocking noise when going over speed bumps too!

Im hearing theres quite a few people with engine trouble with these cars?

Quick backfire when turning at the end of the road, maybe 5/10mph.
Engine management light came on ,stayed on for about 30 seconds then off again.

Took into Audi, they put a camera into the cylinders and noticed scoring and marking etc.

I really feel for you buddy !!!!!

I also know things can happen to any car but when you pay for an expensive car like the RS4 and you don't get reliability and /or service it gets to you !!!!! Or at least it did to me.

In all fairness that's the first engine problem I have heard off, but the DRC knock has been mentioned many times before. I had it in my own car and Audi refused to do anything for me. It annoyed me so much I sold my car and won't ever buy another Audi again. I hope you have more luck getting your problems sorted than I had with mine !!!!!!

Best of luck !!!!!!

Your never going to buy another Audi because of the knocking DRC your car suffered from.

Hi RIV,

My frustration wasn't with the fact my car had a fault, after all many cars do. Its simply the way Audi treated me, and refused to help with my complaint.

I have been an Audi fan and owner for years now, and have owned a few of their top end models.

My B7 RS4 had this exact same knock 7 years ago and Audi fixed the problem by replacing the shocks. At that time as I'm sure you will all know, there were so many complaints about knocking and leaking DRC suspensions, that although Audi never admitted there was a problem, they did, as a goodwill gesture, give anyone who had DRC problems, an extended warranty on their shocks.

Seven years later in my new improved B8 RS4, the knock is still there. That in itself is a disappointment to me that Audi haven't even tried to address the concerns of many RS owners. Lets face it, this problem has been on going now in both RS4 and RS6 cars for 12 years now. But the entire basis of my argument was simply, how did a fixable fault seven years ago become an unavoidable characteristic ????????? Because thats exactly what the senior team in Audi UK have told me it is.........an unavoidable characteristic !

But my biggest problem is when I complained about both front shocks knocking in my brand new RS (with only 50 miles on the clock), I was told that all settings where within Audi's guidelines, there were no failed components my car, and that it was simply a 'characteristic' of the car, which in turn meant that the shocks couldn't be replaced under warranty. I was raging the dealer wouldn't help me and immediately complained to the managing director of Audi Uk. Argued my case for some time with their senior team, and eventually had to give up. I did try to reject the car, but Audi wouldn't accept the rejection because they insist there isn't a fault with the car. We went round in circles and I just gave up and sold the car at a considerable loss because I just couldn't live with the knock on a daily basis.

I live in Northern Ireland and paid £1500 more for the car than a mainland dealers quote. I did that because the dealer assured me if I bought and serviced the car from the same local dealership, Audi goodwill could be applied should there ever be an occasion where there was ever any question with regards warranty. I paid extra money to extend my warranty to 5 years because I had intended to keep this car long term, and as I had trouble with my last DRC suspension I wanted the peace of mind that I would have no trouble during my ownership. So to cut a long story short I don't believe I couldn't have done anything more as a customer to protect myself, after all I paid for a new car, extra warranty, Audi goodwill, but all that happened was me being out of pocket and being forcibly told that it was just a 'characteristic'.

Maybe I have blown this out of proportion, but I simply don't believe Audi should treat their high end customers this way. Its not acceptable to say a knock is a characteristic of a £70,000 car !!!!!! This is a very much shortened version of the events but I hope you can see why Im frustrated, and I guess thats my rant over !!!!

I took mine to my dealer as the horn had stopped working (known fault, water ingress) and also told them I have a slight knock on the front right. They called and said "you Milltek is knocking under the car". I counteref that by saying it was the same pre-Milltek. They had no answer to that and said everything was fine with the car. I didn't argue as the car handles just fine. It's been logged with them now so any further issues can refer back to that.

I really couldn't be bothered to argue. I am just going to enjoy the car.

The more you read the forums the more you start looking/listening for the issues others fell they have.

Yeh I can understand what your talking about, my b7 was in 4 times for the DRC
I nearly Sold the car because it annoyed me so much, and yes it's not acceptable for a 70k car to have knocking suspension!!
Why do some knock!! and some don't!! if its a characteristic of the car?? Don't forget Audi have had 12 years to build their excuses up

I can give you Audi's exact reply to that question later after I get home from work but they basically said due to manufacturing tolerances this characteristic may be apparent in some vehicles !!!!! What a pile of poo ! If that was the case and they have been having the same problem for 12 years I think it's time they changed their manufacturing tolerances.

I genuinely wouldn't have an issue if they were struggling to fix a fault as long as they we're trying, but the fact of the matter seems to be that Audi seem to be distancing themselves from the problem by simply refusing to attempt to repair the knock, whereas 7 years ago they fired shocks at everyone's car who had problems. Their unavoidable characteristic statement plucked me off me end !!! How do you fight that in a court of law ! Audi telling a judge this is a normal operational noise and joe blogs saying it isn't !!!!! It's the fact also that they wouldn't do the right thing and accept my rejection. I even offered to buy a new Q7 but they insisted they wouldn't accept the rejection because there was no fault. Obviously had they accepted the rejection they would have been admitting a fault and the possibility of having an influx of people over the years with regards possible compensation coming back to them isn't an option. They will never admit its a fault even though we all know it is !!!!!!!

Sorry to the original poster for taking the conversation away from your original question. I might even start a thread of my own about Audi's responses if anyone is interested !

My local Audi Ipswich dealer have changed an RS4 and RS6 engine recently. Was gutted no-one told me as they were stored under a tarpaulin in the back yeard for a couples of days before being shipped away. Would have organised a club black op to get them if I had known.

**UPDATE**

So at the minute the total warranty bill is around £18500.
The new engine went in and still they were getting errors, but a quick change of the spark plugs fixed that, apparently (why they put all plugs into a new engine I dunno???)
Anyway, car was ready to pick up, I rejected the car and told them to order me a new one.
Been on with Audi UK and my local dealer and they are trying to organise it. Dealer thinks Audi will agree to it considering the circumstances... Gotta wait until next week to see if Audi agree! Then it's a new 2015 RS4....!!! Nice!!!

Just curious, but why would Audi agree to give you a new car if it had spent £18.5 k on an engine under warranty, which is now fine and free from errors ? Why did they say about your DRC knock ?
