Re: Winter Tyres or Chains for a Roadtrip to Switzerland..
First day we've had of real snow here in Swindon, and my car (and it's expensive snow tyres) is in getting serviced - bloody typical
However, I did manage a massive drift out my street this morning on full throttle just to wake the neighbours
The difference between my car on winters and the 2.0ltr diesel A4 courtesy car I have for the next couple of days is huge on the white stuff, so it highlights just how good winter tyres are

Looks like a fun road trip. How was the fuel consumption? Or should I ask

Average speed 58. 25.9mpg. 85 on the motorway, variable else where (obviously, such as 20-25 up the mountain.miatang wrote:Looks like a fun road trip. How was the fuel consumption? Or should I ask

Thats actually sounds quite better reasonable. Better than my S4 and Q7

There is no doubting winter tyres on the continent are useful
But after running a RWD car for the first time through winter I see no need for them at all in England (Scotland and Wales I accept).
Of course IF we get big snow your fooked, but for that 1 (maybe 2) days, you just deal with it rather than going through all the effort and expense of new wheels and tyres.
And once you add Quattro to the mix it's just ridiculous to consider winter tyres in England
All in my opinion and experience
I am not god

I disagree having run them for the past 6 weeks or so....on the really cold mornings you just get in and drive, not having to worry about frost etc.HYFR wrote:There is no doubting winter tyres on the continent are useful

Re: Winter Tyres or Chains for a Roadtrip to Switzerland..
Have you ever run winter tyres HYFR?
I must say that I'm firmly in the pro winter tyres corner and have all three cars in the household on them (2x4WD and 1xRWD). Even on cold dry roads I can see a performance difference along with much better wet weather performance over the summer tyres I have used which are PS3's and GY F1's. A good peddler behind the wheel can probably manage without but I'd rather embrace winter conditions with the cold, wet, and sometimes snow we have, rather than try manage my way around them.

Winter Tyres or Chains for a Roadtrip to Switzerland..
Yes I ran winter tyres on an R8 and all season tyres on a Gaylander
I don't doubt for one second they are better
My point Is more they are not anywhere near necessary in England
I'm not putting them down.
