White Smoke
White Smoke
Not sure if this a problem but when I accelerate hard using the kick down feature in auto at high speed I get a huge puff of white smoke from the exhausts.
Oil temp is fine and so is the qty of oil (not overfilled or under), does not happen when accelerating when using the paddles only on hard kick down.
Any body else had this / know of this?

Re: White Smoke
Just to be clear, what happens if you are say at 40 in 4th (manual mode) and then put foot flat down before dropping two gears?
Re: White Smoke
Doesnt matter what your driving style is, at the end of the day it shouldnt smoke, take it back to the dealers
Re: White Smoke
I think this happened to me at the weekend. Similar kind of scenario. At the time I thought it was spray from standing water and I haven't tried to replicate it since but I will do now.L10LPT wrote:Not sure if this a problem but when I accelerate hard using the kick down feature in auto at high speed I get a huge puff of white smoke from the exhausts.

Re: White Smoke
i used to get a rusty colour from my exhaust when i booted it after a lot of pottering about, took me ages to figure out what it was, turned out to be the build up of dust in the exhaust tips from driving up a dusty unmade road to my workshop every day, made me poop my pants the first time i saw it in the rear mirror.L10LPT wrote:Not sure if this a problem but when I accelerate hard using the kick down feature in auto at high speed I get a huge puff of white smoke from the exhausts.

how do you know the oil level is not to high as i found that the on screen oil level did not show it was over filled so i got a dip stick and checked mine when the dash said full the dip stick showed over filled by about 1 ltr
i find if you keep it between 1/4 to 1/2 on the screen its about right, never had white smoke but before i reduced the level i used to get regular smells of crank gases in the cabin if parked on an incline with the motor running,i did post a question ages ago about crankcase smells,i think they are overfilled from the factory just to be safe as they can burn a bit of oil and most people just wait for the light to come on

Re: White Smoke
I've never seen it when driving, but my first b8 made a decent amount of smoke when on the rolling road day at AMD

Re: White Smoke
My car is new from March 2014 and has 5,500 miles on the clock.
Speaking to the dealer who is going to have the car looked at. Got to say I'm not at all happy with Audi, same car had 3 seperate attempts to fix a back seat rattle, then the dealer told me the gearbox was leaking oil and the whole unit need replacing. The car was then off the road for 3 weeks and now who knows what up with it now.

Re: White Smoke
Ok - thought it might be exhaust sealant gunk if it was newish but 5k miles is way more than it needs to sort that out.
Did this start happening after the gearbox issue? (my guess is yes) as it looks as if oil may be getting into the system. I didn't think that the gearbox shared any oil lines with the engine so how it would get into the exhaust I don't know but it might be spitting out some under load and it's smoking on the exhaust pipes?
Either way this isn't sounding normal at all or remotely ok. If it is oil on the exhaust pipes then that's a potential safety concern so worth checking out sooner rather than later. It might be something stupid as overfilled but still not great.
What would be useful to know (but understand if its something you don't want to provoke!) is have a friend follow you and see if they can determine if the smoke is out the pipes or just under the car. It's impossible really to tell from the drivers seat.

Ha ha you got to be joking!!Ok - thought it might be exhaust sealant gunk if it was newish but 5k miles is way more than it needs to sort that out.
This sort of thing just confuses the matter, I would just be patient and see what Audi comes up with
I do hope you have a decent loaner from them??
Re: White Smoke
Before the car goes in my dealer has said that the White Smoke under hard acceleration is nothing to worry about! Think they are being a little dismissive to say the least.

Take it to Kim Colin's at QST tunning for a second opinionBefore the car goes in my dealer has said that the White Smoke under hard acceleration is nothing to worry about! Think they are being a little dismissive to say the least.
Re: White Smoke
You'd expect black smoke under hard acceleration as the engine enriches the fuel mixture.
White smoke out the exhaust is either oil or water/coolant. Oil will be slightly blueish. Steam when cold (esp this time of year) is fine and even worse when the car is used on short town journeys.
If the engine is nice and hot and still white then it has to be from somewhere else (and none of them good). Worth checking the oil filler cap and dipstick as if you are getting contamination then you can get a mayonnaise type film everywhere.
Oil smoke can be pistol rings or valve stem seals but can also be a failed air/oil separator. Overfilling the oil is a very common cause as it gets drawn into the intake system and smells awful (and causes alot of smoke).
Why this would happen after gearbox work is a puzzle though. Certainly not normal.
