most of these cars found their way to dealerships it seems - having been looking for a while I recognize quite a few of the number plates.

Yes, I saw many of them on UK motoring reviews (mostly magazine types)...they would have been "well run in". 6 of which were 'progressively' driven around Oulton Park & Millbrook in late 2012 by a select bunch of very enthusiastic customers and a few Audi Touring Car drivers; who were nutters !!

I would usually treat OV, OY and similar pre fixes with caution! - Press office usually register all demos etc via Oxford from what I understand.

They are registered in Oxford because they are managed my Paragon Fleet Solutions on behalf of Audi UK...it does not mean they have all be tracked.

My first V10 R8 for example was OV but it was a Audi UK funded demonstrator for Derby Audi...I.e never went near a track...£100k motors take up a lot of funding lines!

Maybe not a track but it'll have had a lot of foot fall and had its pedal mashed to the carpet from mile one. That's not everyone's ideal.

Guess it depends - rightly some are just demos and Audi UK cars - they usually have an extremely high spec too so not all bad!..
