RS4 B8 Depreciation

Post by Chris G » Tue Nov 27, 2012 3:05 pm

So, I realise it's a bit of a crystal ball request but what's everyones thoughts on B8 RS4 depreciation?

I'm thinking £20k drop in value in the first 24 months?

Decent Spec = £65k

36months later = £32.5k

so, yeah, £20k in 2yrs is about right

Sounds about right. I don't think it'll be anything as good as the B7 due to lots of factors (financial crisis not so bad, no competition, no other audi complimentary product).

I would use the M3 as a good benchmark as it has similar issues.

If depreciation is a major issue, then don't buy any new car.

Audi residuals still hold up better than most marques, but to lose £32.5k in 36 months is a leap of faith too far for me - so I think that I'll stick with my B7 RS4 Avant, certainly for now with a view to getting into a decent second hand B8 in a few years time.

GIVEMERS4 bought a new A6 3.0TDI listing at £55k or so and at three months old and 300 miles - he's being offered £35k for it - OUCH....!

One thing is certain, car dealers aren't sentimentalists - they won't think twice about offering you a heck of a lot less than you could sell it for privately, but then you're up against tyre kickers and it has to be said - a certain forum member, who knows the price of everything, but the value of nothing.

the B7 has held up reasonably well here. You can get a good 2008 for around $42,000...but that's a 4 year old car that was only about $75,000 brand new.

We didn't get the B5, nor will we get the B8, so that probably helps.

Can't be too many out there who don't care about depreciation in any way. I'm in the fortunate position to buy an RS4 outright. I still want to make a reasonably informed decision about what I commit to from a cost of ownership point of view. While I'm wating for the car to be built, I have lots of time to mull it over. The question for me is if am I happy with circa £10k per year for the RS4. I'm not too sure right now.

I don't tend to think about it, I always take a big hit.

Examples (may have posted elsewhere)

Just sold X5 this week

Cost £55k, sold for £24k. 44% retained over 4.5 years and 56k miles

TT sold to buy porker. Cost £40k, sold for £12k. 30% retained over 4 years and less than 30k

Considered chopping exige for new one. Cost £40k. Offered £26k (as p/ex so possibly more private). 65% retained over 4 years and 20k miles

When you look at the X5 that works out at c£550/mth and you would not have been able to lease one to that spec and given the low interest rates on savings that is overall my true cost

Who knows about the B8 but I intend to keep for 3-4 years as the curve smoothes out anyway.
Currently :
Porsche 992S
Porsche Cayenne GTS
Porsche GT4 RS
Lotus Exige V6 ( tuned to c430bhp)
Seat Ibiza excellence Lux!
1987 Porsche 928S4
1967 Jaaag Mk2 3.4

Ex
2017 AMG E class wagon
2012 Audi RS4 (B8)
2012 Porsche Boxster S (981)

Good to hear you got the X5 sold. Your yearly cost of ownership doesn't look too bad at that.

I really need to learn to keep my cars longer, which I fully intend to do with the RS4.
I've tended to get itchy feet before two years ownership previously, sometimes after only a year which is sore when I like to buy new cars.

Having lived and worked in the Benelux countries for many years, people there tend to buy a new car and keep it seven years.
They reckon that is the break-even point in terms of usage/cost of ownership.
There is not the vibrant market changing cars every two-to-three years that we have in this country.
In many ways we behave like fashion victims, always moving on to the next fad?

I've seen it happen with all the performance cars- as soon as they fall from favour, then their value diminishes at the same rate.
The B7 has held its value pretty well.
First owners of B8 RS4s will take a big hit. Enthusiasts will get into them at or around the £30k secondhand price, because that is what we can afford.

The garage where I buy my V-power is run by a petrolhead.
He's desperate to have a drive in my car, but I know that he'd want to buy it for nothing like its value, so I avoid the issue.
However he did tell me that my car was depreciating at £400 pcm.
Supply and demand.

If you buy a car worth £65k plus or get it on HPI why be concerned about depreciation go and buy a Micra, like buying the car and moaning about the mpg

Just because people have money to spend doesn't mean they don't care about depreciation.
2014: 8V S3, Scirocco (mistake)
2013: B8 RS 5, 3.0T S5 coupe, B8 S5 cab - temp, B8 S4 avant
2011: 2.0T FL Octavia VRS
2010: 1.8T Octavia VRS

Sorry, but that's a ridiculous statement to make
Just because someone can afford to buy a 60k car new, doesn't make them any less of an enthusiast than you (as in your statement 'we enthusiasts')
I have friends with 500k cars who are as much an 'enthusiast' as the guy that builds his own 15k Westfield and drives it all year round and works on it twice a week between reading car mags and watching wheeler dealers/Motorsport . Earnings and ability to buy have no influence on enthusiasms levels

You're right in part of your post, new B8 buyers will take the biggest hit financially, but then perhaps that makes them more 'enthusiast' as they're prepared to shell out more for their passion, no ?
