Thanks for the replies, I thought it was a facelift change.
The reason for my confusion was this picture is supposed to be from a 15 plate car advertised on Auto trader.

That driver cockpit picture is not one of the actual car, your confusion is quite right.

It's a pre MY'14 interior picture grabbed from somewhere, as you have the inferior nav system with higher button count and the smaller steering wheel paddles. If you look closely you can see the car has 34k on the clock, which is also different to the advertised cars 19k. Further still, that same picture shows a silver coloured A-pillar trim yet the interior shot with the pan-roof & buckets has a black headliner. The bucket seats also have the cross stitching panels, which is the run out 'edition' exclusive feature.

I have a higher spec car with less miles, which I might consider selling.

The eight button MMI was the original no cost option DVD based navigation that came with the first round of RS4's from 2012. The four button is the Hard Disk drive based 3G MMI was a cost option that then became standard from about MY14. The DVD based one came with a slightly smaller 6.5" screen whereas the HDD based was 7" and had a better resolution.

Mine is an early one (Nov 2012) and has the two (total four buttons) layout with a hard disk and the 6.5" screen, but it is specified as MMI+, so even early ones can have the two-button layout.

Yes, this is what I was saying, all B8.5's have the 2 button layout, the 4 button layout is from the pre-face lift B8 which makes the picture posted very unusual. All B8 RS4's are B8.5.
