Headlight removal

Post by Rs4nutter » Sat Jan 13, 2024 12:24 am

Evening all

Osf headlight bulb has popped, is it an easy job to do myself? Or best to go to a dealer?

Cheapest bulb I've seen is at Halfrauds for £50, is this about right?

Cheers

Never done it but doesn't seem tricky (OS headlight may need to come out or moving the expansion tank which is right up against it in the RS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiR257B3R_c

Just replaced my xenon bulbs on a mk5 gti and can recommend Osram night breakers (got them for £85 from GSF albeit probably more for the RS fit bulbs) - they were noticeably brighter than the previous bulbs. When mine go, I'll probably replace them with those Osrams

i dont im afrad, there are a few, all around the 30-40 quid mark. I got both different types. The only difference i could tell is one looked more cheaply made presses steel whie the other had a cast heatsink.

I've just changed my offside ballast after swapping the bulbs from side to side to confirm it wasn't a defective bulb.
I trawled through all those available - the vast majority if new ones seem to be of Chinese origin, although some claim to have a 5 year warranty. There are several used which are sold as good.
I bought one that appeared to be and was listed as a geninue Mitsubishi unit (as the original) for £50. It came in a authentic VW box with the label, and although it appears we'll made, I really could question whether it is a genuine part or not ( the company have a few negative feedback re copy items sold as genuine).
But it works OK, and for a fraction of the price of one from Audi, and hopefully will continue to do so.
Worth noting that the original VW Group ballasts have a number 4 printed on the top of the aluminium cover plate, above the label. It appears copies (whilst claiming they are genuine) don't.
Also worth checking the suffix on the part no - there are B, C, E and F available. Mine was an E suffix.

All sorted, bought a ballast off amazon, changed it over, put original bulb back in, all works fine 👍

Out of interest, did you have to remove the bumper to get the headlight out?
