Which Oil
This has probably been done to death and im too lazy to deep trawl.
My car needs an oil top up according to the MMI, what oil are you guys using and from high to low what is the capacity, If I recall on my B7 it was 1 litre.
Had a quick look and can't see a dipstick ?
Cheerz

Re: Which Oil
Castrol edge titanium 5W30 fully synthetic in mine.
No dipstick, just MMI for oil level.
Not sure on that but manual says to add 0.5l at a time.

Re: Which Oil
Good man, what oil does Audi use, I'm guessing it's a rebranded market oil..

Re: Which Oil
And, how much oil consumption is normal?

Re: Which Oil
I'd say that depends on driving style, assuming the differential on upper and lower marks is 500ml and based on my mileage 1tr should cover 12k milesgoram wrote:And, how much oil consumption is normal?
If I remember correctly my B7 came with 1ltr of oil in the boot plus an Audi Golf brolly, think that's how they came out the factory.

Re: Which Oil
Audi dealer put in the Castrol edge 5/30 last service, but has used shell helix in the past.
I have never had to top mine up between services, probably due to mileage driven.

Re: Which Oil
My Audi dealer always seem to use Castrol Edge 5w/30 on my services.
My B8 never needs topping up with oil between services, although it is very low mileage.
My B7 used to need topping up a couple of times between services - especially when nearly new, although it seemed to settle down after around 20k, and then it used to go the service interval without any topping up. I understand that the ideal scenario is using oil whilst 'bedding in' but then settling down, rather than not using any when new but then start using oil between services as the miles increased......
Audi used to say 1 litre of oil consumption per 1000 miles is acceptable, which I personally think is excessive..

Re: Which Oil
My cars going in to A for Audi on Wednesday, there's too many rattles off the suspension to ignore, its gradually increased since I bought it 6 weeks ago, just not sure what it is, to me it sounds like top mounts and less like control arms, the shocks seem to work just fine, but somethings definitely up..having passed an MOT and had a visual look over by A for Audi with me under the car a week after I bought it looked fine..I'll get them to top up the oil when it's in.
Hope I don't get a call to say the shocks are fucked, the tech told me they just done a full set including hoses etc cost 6500.00.. cars done 28k... and runs perfectly but can't put up with this rattling..

Re: Which Oil
If you are thinking along the lines of the shocks being at fault, there is plenty of info on here about the inherent problems with the front shocks, especially during the warranty period. These were largely sorted under the manufacturers warranty (and sometime afterwards) by Audi due to the number of vehicles with the issue, although Audi were initially reluctant to accept there was an issue (It's a characteristic of the vehicle Sir...
) Yours may be a different issue, but these symptoms were mainly a light knocking / clunking whilst negotiating minor road defects, rather than from potholes.

Re: Which Oil
Yea, it's been to death on here, I browsed through this and other forums, I just dropped her off about an hour or so ago.
I'm taking a punt on either or both accumulators, if that isn't the case, it's as close to gubbed top mounts as I've ever heard.
It's difficult to describe knocks and bangs in type I find.. N/S/F and R are noisiest but as the system is laid out in an X both O/S/F and R ain't that quiet either.. in my experience it's unlikely I'd have knackered mounts/arms on all 4 corners at one time..
But then again what do I know, I sell houses for a living
Edit: It's pretty much simple small bumps, ruts etc in the road, speed bumps and as you say minor road defects..that type of thing..

Re: Which Oil
So N/S/F is leaking, replacement Inc hoses etc, drain Full system down and recharge both systems their quoting £1540.00 (I'll need to check if that's plus VAT or not)..
Which brought into question the rattles on the rear
... of which N/S/R is noisier thus confusing me due to the cross chassis sussie layout !..
I haven't ever really been a fan of doing one side on a suspension overhaul, I thought in for a penny in for 50p.. get the two fronts done, but Andy the owner advised to just do NSF, drain and recharge the full system see how it goes, which is reasonable considering the cost per corner, I'll give him that for not trying to lever an additional 1500 out of me.....
tbh I'd do the lot but I'm on the rocks having just bought the car and paying for last weekends wedding, so I guess that's the driver in this, the car is in excellent order and low mileage so worth keeping.
I keep thinking my bikes, and all the shocks I've fitted in my life..always, always done the pair !
My track bike is in on my ramp as I speak, and is possibly in the process of a fork overhaul if I can't suss out a high speed shudder under hard braking... both fork legs that is lol...
Booked in for next Wednesday..

Re: Which Oil
I see Halfords have dropped 4 ltrs of Castrol Ti Edge 5/30 to 34.88 from 39.99. With my trade card the higher price was 35 quid.. so I'm guessing 30-31 quid with my card, for a change and filter am I looking at 9 litres ?
Cheers

I supplied 10 litres last service, got one of the litres back with seal broken, it might be 9.5litres?

Re: Which Oil
Sounds good, I just bought the twelve for top ups.. so the 35 quid is just reducing it to trade price, my trade card offered no further reduction.
Opted for a Bosch filter from my local motor factor who had one in stock, comes with new O ring seal too.. £20.00 which is a similar online figure, so happy all round..
